Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Just downloaded and installed the latest version of AS but I get the following error message (followed by others if I keep clicking through).
Running the file as administrator gets the same result.
OS is Win 11; browser is chrome; security is Norton 360
Any ideas on how to overcome this?
Thanks in advance

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Something on your system is stopping AS from accessing the folder in your documents.
It may be that when you install AS you need to right-click on the installer and choose Run As Administrator.
Alternatively it may be a security setting. See this Knowledge Base page and the section "Ancestral Sources blocked from accessing documents".
I've just released an update to fix an annoying bug that was reported today (that all of you would have spotted eventually) so please download this new version first from the download page.

Thanks - will try that tomorrow and post the result
Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
I have had the same problem but when I access Ransomeware to follow the instructions the message Page not available is displayed.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Same issue after trying to instal 7.7.1 as administrator.
I just ignored the AS error messages to see what might happen and I then got a warning message from my security software (Norton 360) that something ancestral sources was doing had been blocked.
I had the option of getting N360 to ignore the warning and, fingers crossed, AS seems to be loading OK
Hope this helps someone else

I have tried and had the same result as rfj1001.

As an experiment, try to open that XML file in a plain text editor, change "1.0" to "1.1" in the first line and save it, then change back to "1.0" and save again. That checks you have read/write access to the XML file.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
rfj1001 seems to have solved his problem which was caused by Norton 360. Do you have any anti-virus/security software installed on your PC or are you just using the built in Windows Security? Which version of Windows are you using?

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Mickawin mentions accessing 'Ransomware' to follow instructions, gives a blank page. I presume that he means he has something like Malwarebytes or similar installed that's picked up the AS installer as a threat

I have Windows 10 and just the Windows security. Never had the problem before.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
OK, but in your previous post, you said
What is this? Ransomeware is something installed to your PC, not by choice, or by mistake, that destroys files etc. and asks you to pay to have files decrypted. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RansomwareI have had the same problem but when I access Ransomeware to follow the instructions the message Page not available is displayed.
So do you mean that you have some other program that combats 'Ransomware'? Can you provide screenshots of what happens when you try to install AS?

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
I'm guessing he means Ransomware Protection which is now in Windows Security (just type Ransomware in the Windows task bar search box). Another user (Nick Walker, I think) had mentioned in another post about making adjustments to the settings there to allow folder access for AS.

Yes Ransomeware comes with Windows security.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Ransomware doesn't come with Windows Security (that would be bad!), but Ransomware Protection does. If you go into Windows settings and search for Ransomware protection does it find it? You suggested earlier than when you select it you get a 'Page not available' error when you try to open the Ransomware Protection? Can you post a screenshot of that?
Another way to get to this would be to open up Windows Security and choose 'Virus & threat protection'. Then under 'Virus & threat protection settings' click on 'Manage Settings'. Then scroll down to 'Controlled folder access' and choose 'Manage Controlled folder access'. If the page loads and assuming 'Controlled Folder Access' is on you could then choose 'Allow an app through Controlled folder access'.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
I wonder if either of these two settings may cause a problem:
The first might be an issue but am not sure.
I have just switched the second on, to see what happens next install.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Hi David. Yes that's what I have already suggested when I directed the original poster to the third option on this page: https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/solvi ... l-sources/. The problem is that they don't appear to be able to get to the Ransomware Protection page.
I can't see why dynamic lock would cause this kind of issue.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Hi Nick,
I realise that but thought an image may be helpful.
I only suggest Dynamic Locking as something that could interfere with an ongoing process, though probably AS installation is fast enough for that not to be an issue.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Those using Norton 360 that can't access the various Windows Security features due to various other issues.
Try changing your Norton 360 settings to check that AS is allowed access to essential computer folders, access through Firewall settings, ETC. I experienced the same issues reported and set the Access to Allow and this solved the problem. See screen shot.

Your 15 mar solution on Ransomeware protector seems to have worked. Thanks.

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Great, thanks for letting me know.
Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
I tried the Norton 360 suggestion but it has made no difference even though my exe file is OK to go.
When I first tried to install the software, Norton just kept on blocking all the files.
When I tried to make an entry, I couldn't save it at all.
Er, help?!

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
And have you checked that this isn't due to the Windows built in Ransomware [Protection] as I suggested in my first reply in the thread - 3rd section on this page: https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/solvi ... l-sources/.
I'm unsure what else to suggest really. Did you definitely install Ancestral Sources by right-clicking the installer and choosing Run as Admin (again in my first reply)?

Re: Error Message after installing v7.7.0
Hi Nick
I haven't got a Ransomeware problem. Mine is Norton 360. I wondered whether it would be sensible to uninstall AS completely and then reinstall an earlier version? And, yes, I tried to run as adminstrator.
Thanks
Janine

Nick referred you to this article, 3rd item https://fhug.org.uk/kb/kb-article/solvi ... l-sources/
It's not installed Ransomware Janine, but the Ransomware component of the Windows Security software

I used those steps recently and it worked fine to allow AS to run. You have to do the same for some plugins, as well as other programs (eg FTM)
