Lookup Missing Census Facts ~ Frequently Asked Questions

Why don't the online searches use my logged in account?

Before initiating online searches, login to Ancestry or FindMyPast or MyHeritage subscription accounts using your PC default browser.

The default browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) is the one used by the Plugin to present the Lookup Web Page, and from that page you can login via another tab of the same browser.

If you login via a different browser, then your enabled accounts will not be recognised.

How is the actual or estimated Birth Year determined?

Usually the Birth Year is obtained from the Date in the Birth Event. An offset of ± 5 years is applied to allow for Approximate, Calculated, and Estimated dates, and for the rounding applied to ages in some Census Records.

Otherwise, an estimated Birth Year is obtained from other events such as Baptism, Christening, Death, Burial, Cremation and Marriage, not only of the Individual, but also their relations. The Tools > Preferences > Estimates settings also play a part.

The ± offset is determined from earliest and latest estimated Birth Year values, and may be affected by Period and Range dates.

For some web searches the birth year and offset is further adjusted to satisfy web site requirements and defaults.

Which are the partial Census Records that can be excluded?

The Exclude any partial Census Records… option excludes the following collections for each country:

  • U.K.
The collections for 1790 Corfe Castle, Dorset and 1801/1821 Dartford, Kent and May 1831 Nether Hallam,Sheffield.
  • U.S.A.
The Aug 1790 to Aug 1820 records, where many are lost or destroyed, and the 1890 Veterans records.
  • Ireland
The 1749 to Mar 1851 records, where mostly only fragments survive.
  • Canada
The 1825 to Jan 1861 records, that are very patchy prior to confederation in 1867.
  • Australia
They all cover only a few states, so none are excluded.

Some countries are known to have Census Records, but with no single online repository it is difficult to offer an automated search regime.

So the Plugin allows such records to be reviewed, but the user must search online manually.

These include all the Germany and Norway records, and various others for some web sites.

Tick Exclude any missing Census Records that have no genealogy lookup web site search available to omit such records.

Can a person be recorded as abroad on a Census date?

If Use their Facts to decide if each person was at home or abroad on missing Census dates is ticked then various Facts are checked to identify the location of the person. In particular Birth, Baptism, Christening, Marriage, Emigration, Immigration, Death, Burial & Cremation events are checked providing they have a Date and Place specified.

Also, if a person was abroad on a particular Census Date then any Fact can be entered for that simple single Date with a different Place than the Census Country.

If the person is deemed abroad, then they are not listed as missing from the chosen Census.

How is the Surname of each woman determined?

Until a woman is involved in a Family partnership her Primary Surname is used, which is conventionally her maiden Birth Surname.

Can the Lookup Web Page be used at a library?

To use the Lookup Web Page on another PC, such as at a library, requires it to be copied to a USB pen drive memory stick.

The command to perform this copy is similar for most web browsers.
(If hidden, the menubar File command is often revealed by pressing the Alt key.)

  • Internet Explorer uses File > Save As…
  • Mozilla Firefox uses File > Save Page As…
  • Apple Safari uses File > Save As…
  • Google Chrome uses Page > Save page as…

Also they all recognise the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S

In each case the USB pen drive memory stick should be selected, where an HTML file and a folder with the same name are created.

Alternatively, three files can be copied from the Family Historian Program Data Folder \Plugin Data\ sub-folder.

  • lookupmissingcensusfacts.css Cascading Style Sheet
  • lookupmissingcensusfacts.js JScript Script File
  • lookupmissingcensusfacts-…html HTML Document

How are Census searches refined to adjust the number of matches?

In the Lookup Web Page click a link in any web site column to start an online Census search.

The default search filter values are designed to avoid mistakes such as using the wrong surname for married women or miscalculating the year of an event, but do not guarantee a perfect search. So the filters may need refining to find the desired record, especially if too many or too few records are found by the default search.

Note that people & place Name filters omit text that was enclosed in [[privacy brackets]] or "double quotes" or 'single quotes' along with the symbols ? * ^ " ~ % that have a special effect in various web sites.

Other family members are often included in the filters, but assume monogamous marriages for spouses. Tick Recognise polygamous relationships to allow polygamous spouses to be included.

Tips for refining search filters such as Names and Years are provided separately for each web site:

How do I access the new 'FindMyPast' search modes?

FindMyPast offers three World Search modes as described below.

1) Search All Records Mode

Search records > Search all records offers Who & When & Where options, with a Where drop-down list of countries and a page of guidance notes. But for the UK site these only appear after clicking the large right-hand Search button, otherwise it seems to be confined to UK records.

There is an extensive set of search filters on the left to narrow the search, and these change according to the Category and Collection chosen, but sometimes key filters such as Gender are missing.

For most sites Search records > List all records provides a list of record sets organised by country, which leads to the same search mode as above.

2) Search Record Categories

The Search records drop-down has Categories such as Census, land & surveys or BMD Life Events and these offer similar Who & When & Where and record selection options as above, but with a much reduced set of search filters.

3) A-Z of Record Sets Mode

Via mode 2) above there is an A-Z of record sets button top right, and for the UK site there also is a Search records > A-Z of record sets option.

This offers another method of selecting the same record sets, and then presents a search form with quite extensive search filters, that differ slightly from mode 1) above.

The Plugin uses this last search mode.
