Improve Website or CD DVD HTML ~ Hyperlinks / Text Tab

This option affects URL and a few text formats in HTML pages created by Family Historian.
BEWARE that the Hyperlink & Text Conversions described later are irreversible.
It does NOT affect the hyperlinks create by Family Historian to navigate around the Individual and Family featured pages.

Select the Open URL pages method from the dropdown list.
Even www. and http: hyperlinks created by Family Historian will have their method of opening changed.

  • The default Family Historian method is In same Page frame as the current browser page.
  • The alternative is to open In new Tab / Window, which is officially deprecated on the Internet, so the DOCTYPE for XHTML is altered from Strict to Transitional.

Select how to Abbreviate URL from the dropdown list, to curtail the display of long URL without affecting the target URL.

Select a Tab separator from the dropdown list, and any text with that column separator will be converted into tidy aligned columns. {TAB} means the horizontal tab character, and the option {TAB}… means any number of consecutive tabs will be treated as one column separator.

This option may be repeated if several alternative separators have been used, and can be entirely reversed by using the None option.

Use the Convert all URL … to active Hyperlinks and alter special Hypertext button to perform the changes.

Hyperlinks / Text Tab

These irreversible changes affect URL and text formats in fields such as Notes or added in Wizard Step 8: Final Details via the Advanced button.

Only www. and http: and https: and ftp: and mailto: protocol scheme URL are converted to hyperlinks.

www. & http: are included as Family Historian misses any in "quotes" or <chevrons> despite being recommended formats.

In addition, if a user URL in any text field is embedded in an HTML Anchor Tag then it will be appropriately converted.
e.g.

  • <a href="http://www.domain.com">Domain</a> appears as Domain but links to http://www.domain.com
  • <a href="mailto:fred@domain.com">Mail Fred</a> appears as Mail Fred but opens an E-mail client with its To address set to fred@domain.com

Text Formats

The recognised place-holder text formats are:

  • {{FILE:NAME}} and {{FILE:PATH}} which convert to the current HTML file name or full path.
  • {{DATE:QQQ}} which gives today’s date, where QQQ is a Family Historian Date Qualifier such as COMPACT or LONG.

This place-holder allows image and non-image Media hyperlinks to be inserted:

  • The place-holder code {{MEDIA:file|text}} can be added to any text field that appears in reports, but any Note field is best, such as Individual Record local Note, or Fact local Note, or Source local Note.
  • The file part must be same as the Linked File field of a Media record, either relative or absolute path.
    • Relative paths define the folder path plus filename within the web page folder.
    • Absolute paths use a media sub-folder plus filename within the web page folder.
    • All paths are reduced to lower case, with space characters changed to underscore.
    • If the web page folder plus filename already exists, then the file is not copied to the web page.
  • The text part defines a caption that may contain \n if you want a line break. If |text is omitted then the filename is used instead, without the folder path.

The resulting hyperlink takes the form <a href="folder/filename">text</a>.

A snag with this place-holder is that it may appear in Reports where not wanted when published for other purposes.
