Family Historian Documentation

There are lots of excellent hints and tips in the Family Historian (fh) documentation. All the documentation was included in the V5 Free Trial, so with Calico Pie's permission we have converted it to ebook formats to use on your Kindle, iPad, Android, smart phone, or even in Adobe Digital Editions on your PC.

Every recent version of fh has a companion book "Getting the Most From Family Historian". From fh Version 6 this is only available for purchase in hard copy from such as Calico Pie and Amazon.

fh Versions 3, 4 & 5 included a free PDF copy, and used installed Tutorial Files. The fh V5 free PDF Book and Tutorial Files can be downloaded via the links below. fh V6 only offers a printed copy of the book, which uses the Family Historian Sample Project for its tutorials. Differences between those last two versions are listed in the "Getting the Most From Family Historian" Comparison below.

Downloads and Guides

The best location to install the V5 Tutorial Files is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Tutorial Files\ that may need creating and is preserved by the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin.

fh also offers Help pages for most of its features by clicking the Help button in the current window or pressing the F1 key, and via the Help > Family Historian Help menubar command there is a Search tab and Favorites tab to aid finding topics.

There is a Quick Start Guide both online and as a PDF opened by the Help > Quick Start Guide and Help > Getting Started menubar commands.

The Family Historian Tour has pictorial & video guides and Video Tutorials all reached via the Help > Online Tour of Family Historian and Help > Video Tutorials and Help > Getting Started menubar commands.

If you are new to your current version of fh then check its features at About Family Historian or What’s New (All Versions).

There are independent reviews of fh at Top Ten Reviews ~ Genealogy Software and at GenSoftReviews.
