FH Mailing List

If you prefer to use a mailing list to seek help, Calico Pie provide one at Family Historian at Groups.io. The messages support text formatting and file attachments, so can be an effective way of getting help if you don’t like forums. File attachments, including images, however, need to be approved individually by list administrators, so please only use them when absolutely essential.

Introduction

The FH Mailing List is a public mailing list, and all users and potential users are welcome to join. The list is totally separate from the FH User Group.  There is a friendly group of people there to help, and the program’s author drops by about once a week.

Please note that by default, in common with all other mailing lists, once subscribed you will receive ALL messages sent to the list, not only replies to your own messages. Subscription settings offer a choice of Individual Messages, Digests, or Daily Summaries.

Instructions

The mailing list Home page tells you how to subscribe and unsubscribe. You can manage how you receive emails at your subscription options. For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at family-historian+owner@groups.io.

Can messages be sent to the list if I have not been subscribed?

No. This is to protect you from spam, nuisances, etc. However, the list is not moderated. Any message sent to it by any subscriber is automatically distributed to everyone on the list.

The list is quiet – I haven’t received any messages for 24 hours

If you find that you have not received a message via the list for 24 hours, but you can see messages have been sent by visiting https://groups.io/g/family-historian and looking at the Message History, you may have been suspended. The list computer will automatically stop sending messages after a certain number of messages have bounced from your E-mail address. If you think this has happened to you, then just subscribe again. Of course, it may just mean the list is very quiet; or that you’ve turned off messages for a while and forgotten to turn them back on.

What do I need to do if I change my E-mail address?

You will need to Unsubscribe your old address and Subscribe your new address as explained above.

I’m going on holiday – should I unsubscribe?

If you are going away for a while and will be unable to download mail, then you are advised to inhibit messages.

Log in at https://groups.io/g/family-historian/editsub and select No Email while away.

On your return, you may wish to catch up on messages by searching the list archive.
