Property Box problems

Post by arishmell » 21 Apr 2012 08:05

I run FH on a desktop (WinXP) and a laptop (Win7).  Gedcoms and/or projects (but not settings) are synced via Sugarsync - no problem there, data entry is only done on the desktop.  But since installing Version 5 (full installation on both machines) I have a very frustrating problem with the property box on the laptop.  On opening, the main tab is empty - only the spouse tab is visible and only fields relating to children, if any.  I have two custom tabs - one called Flags I created myself and have been using for about a year (I can tick a box on the tab to make an icon appear on a diagram indicating, for example, death in childhood, death in war, a transcribed will or a query).  The other is the UK Census tab downloaded from FHUG a couple of weeks ago (very useful and much appreciated!).  Both of these tabs are installed on the laptop - and both now regularly disappear.

Since installing 5, every time I use FH on the laptop I have to reset the main tab by reverting to installation settings and then reinstalling the customised tabs.  The problem does not seem to occur if I close FH and reopen later the same day - only when the computer itself is shut down.  I have no problem with v5 on the desktop computer.

This is how the box looks on opening:

And this is how it ought to look:

I wonder if this is a permissions issue on the Property box files. It might be worth checking they have not become write protected. Also try running FH in admin mode and changing the settings. However if it's only happening when the computer is shut down it would suggest another program is causing the problem, do you have any sandboxing type software installed?

As I've no idea what 'sandboxing type software' is, I feel pretty safe saying I have none! Anyway, I think you were right about the write protection thing - somehow all the FH folders and files were marked as read-only. Doesn't explain why the main tab should be blank, but fingers crossed that it's cured the problem. Many thanks for your suggestions, Jane!

My anti-virus software occasionally takes exception to Ancestral Sources and tells me that it is going to run it in Sandbox mode (until I tell it not to be so silly).

I take it to mean that it will run but will not update anything in the deep dark depths of the computer.

The sandbox analogy is that if things get messed up, all is safe and can be easily raked smooth again.

A much better explanation here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandbox_%2 ... ecurity%29

Ancestral Sources is, quite reasonably, viewed suspiciously by some anti-virus and other security software because it doesn't include a 'code-signing' certificate. I'd like to include one but I've so far resisted the urge to pay around £110 every year for a certificate to add to software that I provide free-of-charge. :)
