Scottish Records

Post by McSorley » 03 Jun 2003 12:54

I have just started tracing my family tree, my son is expecting his first child next week so i thought i'd better get started.

Does anyone know of any good sites on the net to help me in tracing my scottish relatives back as far as the mid 1800's. Before that the Mcsorleys were from Ireland, I'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

Thanks.

A good place to start will be
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/
Also
http://www.scotsorigins.com/

I can't be any more specific as I don't have any Scotish ancestors (yet).

For Scots
Try:

http://www.scottishdocuments.com/content/default.asp for wills up to 1901
http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/last7days.cgi? for recent queries,
also gives links to one name
http://www.cwgc.org/   for war graves
http://www.hmc.gov.uk/nra/simple.htm                              for uk documents
http://www.familysearch.org for IGI
http://www.scotlandsclans.com/cemeteries.htm                  self evident
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/                  as someone has already mentioned.

You might try http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - although this is a pay per view site it is, in my view, good value. You can also view the Scottish census records which are very useful.
