This is a forlorn request, I dont expect a postive reply! I have just lost a number of modifications since my last back up of my gedcom when I had a mental abberation and mistakenly used split file on my master file!
I can enter them again, but does anyone know if there is any way to get into the PC file system and recovering the lost data?

Recovering data deleted by split file
I think the chances are slim.
Although there are tools, since you saved the new file version over the old I suspect the old one has been overwritten.

This might help, but if you have done any other work on your computer, I would be suprised, but it might be worth a go.
Another posibility is to restore the orginal back to a new name and merge it with your split file. Obviously this will only help if the people you changed are still in the file.

Thank you for the suggestion of diskinv, which was quite interesting but unfortunately the version dowloaded shows deleted clusters/sectors but does not show deleted files if in they are in the NFTS format. But is does show deleted files in the FAT format used on my USB flash disk, and I was able to undelete an old version of the .ged there but not open it with FH. However, had I wanted this old file I could have probably patched it together to read by FH - The data was certainly visible there.
However, I solved my problem because I found an unmodified renamed version of my master file which I made a few minutes before I started my careless episode of file splitting on the orginal master file. So I dont have to re-enter the 30 or so records which I would have had to do so otherwise.
This raises a question as to whether the file renaming/backup housekeeping could be automatically done for the save and merge procedures. I have set my options under Tools/preferences/Misc to prompt for the backup on exit, and to autosave every 5 mins.
What do you think of adding options to auto backup on exit without prompt and also to auto backup before split/merge? Would this be reasonable for the wish list, or is it just me who is so careless?
