Adoption and Name Change

Post by davidm_uk » 23 Jan 2011 18:52

If you have a child who is adopted and given a completely new name (fornames and surname) as a result of that adoption how would you deal with that in FH? I've added both sets of 'parents' and an adoption fact, with a note about name change.

At the moment I've just assigned a second name to the person (appears as aka ..... in diagrams), with the adopted name as the primary one as that's how they will be known for the rest of their life, but from a genealogy point of view it doesn't feel quite right somehow. I've added both sets of 'parents' and an adoption fact, with a note about name change.

What do other people do?

The popular convention is to enter the Individuals main Name as their given birth name as on their Birth Certificate.

All other names such as married women changes of Surname, adopted names, deed pole changes, titles such as Duke of York, etc, are entered as Alternate aka names.
