Adding Notes

Post by GuitarGirl » 20 Jul 2010 01:02

I am still struggling with FH4 having been using Generations for 10 years. The problem I am having is when I want to write quite a long note about an individual I go to Add Note - Local note - write the information and then what happens is the note appears in the box for that person on the main family screen. I realise I must be doing something wrong but can't work it out. Can anyone help me to isolate the notes so that they appear only when looking at the note itself?

Adding Notes

Family Historian notes can occur in lots of different places so you need to decide what the note is for. Also consider if your long note would be better split over several events as this can sometimes increase readability on the Narrative reports. If it's about an event then attach the note to the event.

Notes for individuals will appear by default on the Focus window, if you don't want them to then simply turn them off on the Focus Window preferences.

To avoid having the notes appearing on the main family screen, click the notes tab, click the ADD NOTES tab and under Note Options click 'add link to note record' and click OK.  When 'select note record' comes up click New.  This will put you in the second box down where you can then add all the notes you want.  When adding additional material to that individual, the lower box will show your previous input and you can then add to it.

A sample in my database:

'In 1900 Clarence is farming in Kahoka, MO.
In 1910 and 1920 Clarence is a farmer in Lincoln, MO.
In 1930 Clarence is still farming in Lincoln.  He owns his home with a value of $1000 and there is a radio in the house.'

Using this procedure will give you a BIG volume of 'NOTES' but keeps the front family page cleaner.  I'm not sure why the notes go by default to the front.  To me that is just a nuisance and I go through the above procedure to get them where I want them.  When I first started with FH from Family Treemaker, FH converted all my notes to the NOTES section that I now use.  This would seem to be to be the better location from the gitgo.  Occasionally I use the front 'notes' area for a particular thing that I want to emphasize.

Jane said 'Notes for individuals will appear by default on the Focus window'.  I must be missing something because my preferences have that checked but nothing appears on the focus window.
