Adoption

Marc,

I had a problem trying to work out how to do this myself recently. An Aunt officially adopted the children of her Husbands first marriage (with agreement of the divorced spouse).

In the end, I created a duplicate set of children with the same (natural) birth details. I attached one set to the natural parent(s) and the other to the adopting parent(s).

The child's details with the natural parents finished with a new fact - 'Placed for Adoption'.

The child's details with the adopting parents started with the Birth (exactly the same as under natural parents), followed by the fact 'Adopted'. This could include a name change (which did not occur in my case).

This approach means that photos or other details can be added in the correct context and flags could be used to indicate the Adoption process was involved.

Unfortunately, this approach does look a bit strange on a diagram, but with Flags and / or box colours this can provide a form of highlighting (if desired).Hope this helps

You don't need duplicate records, with FH you can simply add the same children to both Family Records.

Sorry Marc, the fact that both sets of parents do not appear on diagrams was exactly why I chose the approach I described earlier.
