New Network

After a lot of gratefully received help from here when I bought my new laptop, I have progressed well and have reached the stage where my son-in-law has set up a network for me between my desktop and laptop. I know I can share folders in the Shared (desktop XP) and Public (laptop Vista)folders and I want to be able to use this for my Family Historian tree. Is there a 'how to' or tutorial I can learn from or do I just store my whole FH Projects in the shared folder on each computer? What happens when I use, say, the laptop away from home and add something to the tree - how do I get it to sync with the tree on the desktop? How will I know if I am opening the latest file next time I use it? I am sure it can't be too difficult once I get my head round it.

Although you can use shared folders, you may be better to set up a synchronised folder system between the two machines.

Vista has a built in Sync Centre, but I have never used it, personally I prefer SyncBack (the free version will be fine for your needs).

All you do with that is on one computer share your project folder so you can see it from the other and set up a smart profile to get the files the same on both systems.

It will cope with everything other than you editing the same file on both computers with out syncing them.

Another handy option which I found recently is Dropbox, this works via the internet, but has the advantage of being pretty solid and easy to use.

I am now using it for any items I need on my laptop.

They give 2GB for free, so enough to get started with, and you can earn another 3Gb by referrals who sign up and install dropbox.

If you want to play and would like to earn me a referal, please shout and I will send you an email with a link.

Thank you for your responses, Jane. I am a bit disappointed it isn't as straightforward as I had hoped and I feel somewhat out of my depth. I did download SyncBack but couldn't get my head round it all and promptly uninstalled it, thinking I could just share the folders between the 2 computers. Back to the drawing board! I have a lot of family stuff going on at the moment so will take a while to sort it out but I'll investigate the Vista Sync option and have a jolly good think in the meanwhile and hopefully have a bit more time to concentrate on the best method later on. It is all taking longer than I had anticipated and I feel like I haven't done any actual family history for ages!

I am about to change laptops and will have Vista Home Premium instead of XP
Home.
I upgraded Family Historian from 2.0.7 to 2.3 in 2005
Will this version work with Vista-or will I have to upgrade to V4?
How do I install the software on my new laptop as the original disc ( which
I still have) is out of date?
Thanks for your help.

You can install V2 on to Vista, but you will need to use a CD backed installer, see
[wiki]faq:how_to_install_on_vista[/wiki]

I think you will find after using the CD backed installer you will have 2.3.5, but if not the 2.3 download is available from the top right of the main FHUG page.
