changing file paths amp; saving gedcom

Post by heathermary » 05 May 2009 14:13

Hi, I have 2 questions that I feel I should know the answers to, but don't.
First question is how to change the file paths for multimedia. Specifically, in the past I decided to put my multimedia on a CD and the file path was therefore D:(folderpicture name....) Now I want to keep my pictures in my project folder on my C drive. In version 4 I know how to add new pictures and get them into the media folder but I can't find how to link to my existing photos and reset the file path. I have tried working with external links but it can't change the file path. Have I got to start again and put them on afresh?

Next question: are the pictures actually in the media file or is it just a link? Can I now delete the original folders they came from to save duplicate photos all over the place? Also, can I save the project as a whole entity and it will include the pictures as well as the gedcom?
What confuses me is that I open the file from the projects window, and do whatever, but at the end when it prompts me to backup it goes to what looks like my original gedcom folder. Is it the same gedcom just linked or have I now 2 separate files? Am I saving to the wrong version?
Sorry, this has turned into several questions! Any help most appreciated.  Heather [confused]

Ok I have not done the whole process, but what you should be able to do.

For those items which are still outside of the project folder, but linked in FH, eg the ones which were 'broken' when you created the project.

1. Copy the file in to your selected folder with in the project media folder.

2. Use the re-map button on the External file links tool to point to the file which you have copied in manually. Take the option to re-map with in the project folder.

It will then allow you to reconnect the files. If you have lots in a single folder then select at folder level and re-map.

No it copied the file

Yes just copy the whole project folder.

It is probably using what ever folder you used to use. On my system it's a different drive.

If you want to change it just use preferences. The backup only makes a copy of the gedcom file not all the media.

Is it the same gedcom just linked or have I now 2 separate files?
It's a new file, but the backup will backup what ever project or gedcom file you have open.

Thanks so much (yet again) Jane. I must say I am loving the new version now I am not so nervous of using it and I'll have a go at those links.
