I have a number of distant relatives where i have their married names and not their maiden names. Is there a set way of recording this, such as placing their married name in brackets. I have made a note to say that their maiden name in unknown.

Everyone has their own favourite for this one, personally I put an asterisk before the name, others use brackets, others 'unknown', I think that it all boils down to personal preference, what suits one will be 'wrong' to someone else.
I probably haven't been much help, but you've probably started off a long thread. Actually I'm not sure what to search under but there have been other threads on this subject.

As Rusty says, it's a matter of personal preference. I use [square] brackets. If you do use brackets, make sure there are no spaces within them or FH will parse the name incorrectly.

Apparently, gedcom ignores anything after a closing '/' so I find the following works well for me. If I enter:
Mary//[Spouse of John Smith]
FH resolves this as:
Mary // [Spouse of John Smith]
All these entries are listed first alphabetically and so it is easy to find them when I need to add additional information and gives an immediate indication of the family to which the unknown person belongs.
If unmarried I put something like:
Mary // [Child of John Smith & Mary Jones]
Hope this is helpful.

Gerry names after the / / are not ignored, they are classed as more of the Given names.
This is because in some cultures the given names follow the surname.

Jane,
Thanks for the correction. It was a tip I gleaned from the internet some while ago. It makes the presentation of names consistent and works fine in FH. As everyone I know about so far has their forename before their surname then it works OK for me.
