Mental Hospitals

Post by kateabbott » 22 Feb 2007 12:29

Hi,

I'd like to find out the cause of death of my Great Aunt Beatrice- I know that she was sectioned in a mental hospital in Lewisham, London, in the 1950's and subsequently died there in the 1960's.

Is there any database explaining reasons why people were sectioned and health notes of patients? How would I go about accessing this?

I hope you can help, thank you.
Kate

My initial research is of family names Abbott, Cross, Tye, and Higgs

As far as I am aware medical records are sealed for at least 100 years, but if you can show you are the Next of Kin, you may be able to apply to have them released to you.

You could obviously get a death certificate for your G.Aunt which would show a cause of death.
