Hi all,
I am trying to load a saved file of mine, but as it is loading the egg timer stays on the screen and when I do control/alt/delete it shows the program as not responding.
I have a PC with a pentium 4 processor running at 3.2MHz and 512MB RAM (so should be okay to run the program).
The file is roughly 52MB in size (I am not sure whether this is normal) as I have started to load photos on.
What would be a normal file size?
When I load an earlier copy that I haved saved it comes up instantly, so I am wondering whether I have made some mistakes with loading the photos on?
I have recently downloaded and installed the new 2.3 Version, although I have had this problem before and after the download.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Jen
p.s. I have checked through previous posts but could not find anything that matched.

I doubt very much that is a proper GED-COM file. My own tree with 3000 people in is 300Kb. I presume you are not embedding photos but attaching them as recommended by Calico.
If you have been embedding files then this is probably the cause. Try leaving the machine for 5 mins or so to do all the work it needs to do to extract all the photos.

Hi Jane,
Thanks for your reply.
I am a bit confused as I have not looked at this for a while since it has not been working.
Is the right way to Embed the photos or to attach them?
I cannot remember how exactly I did it.

Hi Jen,
I would strongly recommend linking them rather than embedding them. Image files are big and will quickly make your file unmanageable (as you've found) [frown]. By keeping them separately you can back them up separately, and if something should happen to your GEDCOM file, at least you've still got all your source document images.

Calico recommend not to use Embedding, and only support it to retain their 100% GEDCOM compatibility.

Hi Graham/Jane,
Thanks for the posts.
I left the program to open and it took 25 mins.
I deleted the multimedia files/photos and it halved in size.
I will look again now at the rest.
Thanks for the advice.
