Commercial travellers

Post by ganstey » 13 Jan 2006 08:52

Two of my ancestors (brothers) were both 'Commercial Travellers' according to their census entries. However I'm having trouble tracking them down: One of the brothers appears on the 1851 census, age < 1 year. He then doesn't appear again until the 1881 census where he appears living with his wife, and listed as a commercial traveller. He also appears on the 1891 census, but not the 1901 census.

I've tried looking him up (all spellings and combinations of names I can think of) on ancestry.co.uk in England and Wales, and I've also tried Scotland. I can't find death entries for either of them either.[cry]

My guess is that they were out in The Empire somewhere. My hunch is that they were in the drapery trade, as they seem to be associated with others from that trade when I have found them.

Any ideas how I might track them down?

Cheers
Graham
