Mislinked Diagram from nimrod.blm

Post by Jane » 30 Sep 2003 08:07

On my own descendants' diagram my son's second partner (i.e.unmarried)
is linked to his ex-wife and not to him!
His daughter (by second partner) descends from the link between the two
women! He should be between the two women, with son descending from the
first and daughter descending from the second. Got that?? Wish I had!!
How do I rearrange the diagram please?
Am brand new user trying to wade through 141 pages of manual!!! S.O.S.

I think one of the Women must be set up as a man.

On the records window open up your sons first partner, I think she will have two family as spouse records. Delete the one which links her to the other woman (select the 'family as spouse' colomn and press delete).

On the second woman check she is female, then add her as your sons partner and add the child to the correct marriage.

Having re-read the problem. I think the diagram is layed out as designed.

This is an issue of diagram layout.  I take it you are using the 'Show Spouses' option for spouse display.  There is no absolutely standard way of laying out boxes in these diagrams, but the approach Family Historian uses in this case is a very common one.  This can be summarised as follows:

when positioning spouses of descendants:

- a male descendant's first wife goes to the right of his box
- a female descendant's first husband go to the left of her box
- where a descendant has more than one spouse, second and subsequent spouses are always shown on the right (in order)

Bear in mind that there is no limit to the number of spouses a person may have, so one needs a system that can cope with any number.  Suppose your children had had 3 or more spouses, all with children?  You can see how this system would have coped with it.  Children of 2nd and subsequent marriages always appear to the left of the 2nd (or whatever) spouse.  You can't both cope with an unlimited number of spouses and ensure that children will appear between both their parents (with no other boxes between the parents) without repeating parent boxes; however F.H. will let you do that if that's what you want - see (3) below.

If you don't like the default layout here are some suggestions for varying it:

(1) In the diagram options dialog click on Dimensions.  'Additional gap for 2nd spouses' should currently be set to 5.  Try setting this to a larger number - e.g. 20.  That will increase the distance between 2nd and subsequent spouses, and make it clearer which of them 'owns' any child lines going down (the child line will remain close to their parent).

(2) Click on Diagram > Spouses and Duplicates > Show Duplicates. This will show marriage details (if you have a suitable text scheme selected - e.g. 'Names, Dates') in the descendant's box.  Descendants who married more than once will get an extra 'duplicate' box for each extra marriage, linked via a wavy line (you can control what sort of line it is in the Diagram Options dialog).  That way there is no confusion about who has which children.

(3) Click on Diagram > Spouses and Duplicates > Show Spouses to show spouses as (I presume) you had them before.  Now open the Diagram Options dialog and check 'Show Duplicates with Spouses'.  This way you will get a duplicate box for each of your children, as well as a box for each spouse.  That should remove any possible confusion about who was the child of who.

Incidentally, there are buttons on the toolbar for switching quickly between spouse options.
