Having read and reread the chapter about setting up your own text boxes for diagrams, I have successfully created one with the details I want and applied that to the default. I have then created a slightly different one for the spouse and applied that. Default also changes to the spouse type. If I change the default back to the first design, the spouse one changes also. I have not been able to get different text boxes for the various types. I have followed the chapter to the letter but it doesn't work for me. Why not?

The whole text scheme work fine for me and have created my own scheme with different text in the default box and the proxy box and the duplicate box. I cannot think what you are doing wrong. If you set each of the text boxes to the text that you want, the box type label, in the list of box types, should have an asterisk beside any box type that you have set text in. Does this happen for you?
Do you save the scheme you are setting up as a custom text scheme with its own name? Do you have 'save as default' ticked so that you always open with that scheme?
I don't think I am being much help here but I just cannot see what you could be doing wrong. Perhaps someone else will spot the error.

Let me describe what I have done. I have set up a new text scheme with the details I want. I clicked on default to associate it with the new text scheme called 'full names'. That works.
I have then set up an abbreviated one for spouses without marriage details. Clicked on spouse to associate it with them, and the default changed to spouse also.
Whatever I click on affects all the text boxes, not just the one I am clicking.[cry]

I'm a bit confused when you say 'I set up an abbreviated text scheme for spouses and then clicked on spouse to associate it with them'. I presume that you are working in 'Diagram options' 'text'. In the 'text' pane there is a panel headed 'box type'. To add a text scheme for spouses you should first highlight the box type 'spouse' and then add your requirements to the 'template' panel. This should then cause an asterisk to appear beside 'spouse' in the 'box type' panel to show that spouse boxes have their own text scheme and do not use the default.
I hope this helps you. Have you tried to modify one of the existing text schemes as a trial? You can always delete any unwanted changes that you make.

You should have 1 scheme called full names, not one for each box type.
Each scheme has sections for each box type.
