How do you organise sources on your PC

There are significant advantages in achieving that set-up.
All the Multimedia file links become relative to the FH Media folder, instead of absolute.
This allows the whole Project folder to be saved/moved to another disk, copied to say a USB pen-drive, transferred to a new PC, etc, without upsetting the Multimedia file links.

It should be possible to simply move your entire folder structure into the FH Media folder.
Then Tools > Work with External File Links allows all the Multimedia file links to be remapped at a stroke.

I tried this when I first started, but it wasn't happy when copying files in - since I save them straight there on the whole now, that problem hasn't come up.

I have actually been running this across two systems (my laptop, and a much less powerful notebook that's convenient for taking into places), but through a system of substituted drives, and so on.

It seems one needs to either move the folder within in the Media folder (so everything is in Media{OriginalFolderName}) or fiddle with collapsing the entire tree and selecting it all to remap. I hope there's a better way!

I cannot identify your problems with the limited description given.
Try posting images of either Work with External File Links or Windows Explorer to show your folder structure.
Also you do not say how you synch your laptop & netbook - Dropbox is a popular solution.

As far as copying goes, I just copy them over the home network, which works just as fine as it always did. I ue Dropbox at work, and am quite familiar with it - it just seems an unnecessary complication.

In the past, I had used a substituted drive (X) which pointed to the correct area of the computer I was using (so it wasn't computer specific).

Since I've already done it, I'd have to dig through my backups to find it, but to give you an idea:

Original Layout of drive X:
Dave (my project folder)

Dave-MM (my multimedia folder)
..00001 Dave (My stuff)
..00002 Dad (Dad's details)
(and so on)

Sensible New layout
Dave (project folder)
..Dave.fh_data
....Media
......00001 Dave (My stuff)
......00002 Dad (Dad's details)
(and so on)

However, using work with external files, changing the assignment of the Dave-MM folder made it expect a Dave-MM folder inside the project's Media folder. The only way to deal with it was to alter each subfolder (it was possible to multi-select, but there were above 300 of them, all expanded - I didn't really want to redefine where the inner files went, as I'd open a whole can of worms, so I had to close each individually as the multiple select and - isn't implimented).

Retrospectively, I should have just done a find-and-replace in the GEDCOM for 'X:/Dave-MM/' and changed it to 'Media/' - it would have been a lot less hassle!

I've sorted it now, but thanks for the concern!

Dave
