Expansion Buttons

Post by BillFraser » 12 Apr 2012 15:13

I had assumed that if I set both 'Generations Up' and 'Generations Down' to ALL in Diagram Preferences, I would then get the entire diagram, without any expansion buttons, but this does not appear to be the case in the 'All Relatives' diagram. I think I must be missing something and if anyone can enlighten me I'd appreciate it.
(Possibly related is the confusing fact that when I display all my relatives, I have to use the exansion button to show a group of my second cousins. Yet when I select one of these second cousins and display all his relatives, my box appears without requiring the use of expansion buttons. I am the root of the database, but I don't know if this is relevant.)
Thanks
Bill

Your expectations are correct.
Are you sure you have set ALL Generations for the All Relatives Diagram Options itself.
The number of Generations setting is separate for each type of Diagram.

Yes, I have 'ALL' set for the correct diagram type, and, in fact, I currently have 'ALL' set for all diagram types.
What I find especially confusing is that I thought it used to work the way I think it should be working, and, I feel that something has changed, but so far I've failed to work out what.

When you say without and expansion buttons, do you mean with no expansion buttons showing or with no branches closed?

Both are settings, but found in different places. The buttons themselves are under the diagram menu. Wether or not sibling branches expand is under the first tab of the diagram options.

The Expansion Buttons display, but you have to click on each of them to display the relevant descendants' boxes. I had expected, and I thought used to happen, that with Generations Up and Generations Down both set to All, that all relatives would be displayed, without Expansion Buttons being displayed and needing to be activated.

(PS It is only in some places in this diagram that I get the problem - other descendant lines display as I expect, but I cannot see the rationale for the Expansion Buttons appearing in some places and not others)

My mistake, it's the other diagrams (not all relatives) that you get the option to auto expand sibling branches.

I've tried all the settings, and I can't replicate your problem (and I have plenty of those sorts of branches in my tree). I can turn off the display of expansion button for that type of diagram, but that doesn't solve your issue of not showing all branches (which mine does). Sorry. Maybe someone more technically minded can explain/solve.

This is a stab in the dark.

You display your All Relatives Diagram by choosing View > Standard Diagrams > All Relatives or clicking the All Relatives icon on the toolbar?

You are not displaying a saved Family Historian Chart of All Relatives are you?

What happens if you choose Installation Settings, set Generations Up/Down = All, and then redisplay the Diagram (without ticking Save as default if you don't want them changed)?

I generally use the button, but have just tried the menu route and have the same problem. I also tried setting the Installation default as you suggested but again nothing changed.
By the way, the diagram has just over 1000 boxes (and a few fewer names, which I don't understand). Possibly I'm experiencing some limit in the diagram drawing capabilities of FH4.

Nope, I have 1500 in my tree and it displayed them fine.

When you say that you have more boxes than names, this might be because FH will draw a blank box with no person attached if it knows there has to be a person there, but you haven't entered them. For instance when you have a man and his children, but have no mother/wife recorded. It reasons that as everyone has 2 parents, so it draws the blank box of the unknown parent. Unless it's a direct ancestor.

I have a diagram with over 2500 people which displays all generations without any problem so I doubt that the number of people is the problem.

Another reason why there can be many more boxes than people is that the All Relatives diagram uses proxies.

I've been in communication with Family History Support and they have now diagnosed that my problem is caused by an obscure bug, and this will be fixed in the forthcoming 5.0.1.
Meanwhile, the workaround is to untick the 'Check for duplicates' box in the Diagram Options menu.
