TEXT tag subordinate to DATA

Post by bgriffiths » 20 Mar 2008 11:55

When using the 'Text from Source' input field under Properties the gedcom is out put as follows (eg)

0 @I4309@ INDI
1 NAME Jenny /Meadows/
1 SEX F
1 BIRT
2 DATE 16 APR 1871
2 PLAC Churchtown, North Meols, Lancashire, England
2 ADDR near Bold Arms
2 SOUR @S623@
   3 DATA
       4 TEXT Births Jun 1871   (>99%)
           5 CONT Meadows  Jenny  Ormskirk  8b 667

I use TCGR for reporting, which does not pick up the Text. I had the following reply from TCGR support:
Unfortunately, this appears to be an error in Family Historian.  The GEDCOM 5.5 standard does not provided for a TEXT tag to be subordinate to a DATA tag.

The correct form for the data exported for source text should be:
2 SOUR @S623@
   3 TEXT Births Jun 1871   (>99%)
       4 CONT Meadows  Jenny    Ormskirk  8b 667

If a DATA tag is exported, it is permitted the following subtags: EVEN, AGNC, and NOTE.

You might report this to Calico Pie.  Meanwhile, we will look at a work-around as this error will likely affect all FH users.
I have recently moved from using 'Note', to using Text from Source,so I now have a lot of data being ignored in my reports- argh!

Further response from TCGR
Oops - our mistake.  The export from FH was valid.

We will investigate and resolve the problem with TCGR.

Regards,
Nigel Bufton
For others using TCGR I'll post back when problem is fixed[oops]

Well it looks to me like the GEDCOM standard allows TEXT to be subordinate to DATA, so Family Historian does it correctly and TCGR are wrong. The GEDCOM standard has:

n SOUR @@ /* pointer to source record */ {1:1}
+1 PAGE {0:1}
+1 EVEN {0:1}
+2 ROLE {0:1}
+1 DATA {0:1}
+2 DATE {0:1}
+2 TEXT {0:M}
+3 [ CONC | CONT ] {0:M}
+1 QUAY {0:1}
+1 > {0:M}
+1 > {0:M}

which allows a TEXT tag to be subordinate to DATA.

[Edit: Sorry wrote and posted while Brian was replying. Still at least I was correct [grin]]

TEXT tag subordinate to DATA

The problem has been fixed, so anyone who uses TCGR and has TEXT tags subordinate to DATA tags should re-download & install
