Needing a little help here - head's getting confused...
I've been doing a bit of 'housekeeping' and trying to understand the Family Records.
At various times over the years, I've split files (records from several mini 1-name studies) and then merged them into my main file. All works fine, except... it looks as if the family records of the whole file, rather than just the split off part, have also come into the main file.
These are listed as , and have a marriage and source details, but unless I happen to know who married on that date, I've no idea who they are!
So here's the question:
Can I assume that these records all belong to people not in the file and safely delete the lot?
and is there a box to tick somewhere when splitting files that will delete the unwanted family records as well as the individuals? (I can't find it).
Using v3
Grateful for any help.
Thanks.

A good place to start, is probably to do a quick query to select these records.
You can then once you have done a final check delete them all. Don't forget to also check for children.
You can then simply select the column with the Family Records and delete them.

Thanks Jane,
I'll have a go at that.
The aren't actually a problem - just don't really want them there!
Just for future reference - when splitting a file, is there a way of deleting unneeded family records along with the individuals? Or is the way to upgrade to V4 ...?

By default family records with no links are removed on a split tree, check the settings you are using on the split.
Can you check you are the most recent V3 release, eg 3.1.2 I don't remember there ever being a problem with the split not deleting un-needed Family Records though.
My guess would be it's when you are merging you did not check the family tab for the merge.

Hi Jane,
Oops, sorry. Yes, forgot the Family tab when merging.[oops]
On experimenting, though, I still find that when I split a tree, all the family records are kept. As far as I can see no links left to them at all. But will re-check settings next time I do this.
Version is v3+all the updates.
Thanks again for your help.
