A recent computer failure (motherboard) has meant that I've had to buy a new machine. The old PC was Windows Xp, the new is Windows 7.FH was 3.1.2
The local computer shop retrieved all my data from the old HD and installed it on new PC and I have reloaded FH from the cd's I have plus downloads(with help from Knowledge Base Wiki) All the ged com files inc photos are there and are now working ok.
But I seem to have a problem........
I believe I don't seem to have my application settings or my diagram settings. Trying to open any previous saved trees gives a - unrecognised file format. I looked at Knowledge Base Wiki at Move FH Settings and FH Program Data Folder.
But couldn't get very far.
Question..... Are these settings etc still locked away on the old PC or would they have retrieved with the other data.
I do have a back up on a portable HD but I'm a little reluctant to use it yet. Any help much appreciated.
Regards....Howard

Broken Win Xp PC to new Win 7 PC problems
Lets just check through a few steps involved in moving settings.
1) Copying the Calico PieFamily Historian Folder
Ensure that this entire folder structure is copied from your old XP data into Windows 7.
The XP path was C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCalico PieFamily Historian...
The Windows 7 path is C:ProgramDataCalico PieFamily Historian... (N.B. ProgramData NOT Program Files)
This Windows 7 path will already exist on your new PC, but none of your Custom folder settings will be present unless you perform the above copy.
See http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... ata_folder for more details.
2) Preferences & Standard Diagram Settings
Some FH settings are stored in the Windows Registry and include:
Tools > Preferences settings, which you must set up from scratch on Windows 7.
View > Standard Diagrams > Ancestors, Descendants, Ancestors & Descendants, All Relatives diagram settings.
If you have not preserved these four diagram settings as Custom Diagram Types, and many users don't, then you must use Diagram > Options and re-enter your preferences.
3) Saved Tree Diagram Files
I presume you mean saved Family Historian Chart files with file type .fhc.
If so, in Windows Explorer they should look like this:

If the FH Chart icon on the left &/or the Type are not as shown above, then there is file association problem.
Right click on any .fhc file and choose Open with > Choose default program.
Select Family Historian or use the Browse button to find C:Program Files (x86)Family HistorianProgramfh.exe.
Ensure you tick Always use the selected program to open this kind of file and then click OK.
Family Historian will report that you must open charts using the View menu, which should now work OK.

Problem update
Point 1.
I'm not able to verify this at the moment as I didn't copy the folders over to the new PC (done by local comp shop) and the dard drive is on the broken PC.
Point 2.
I don't think I did any thing with preferences so OK there.
I thought I had saved the diagram settings as a custom diagram type but again I can't access the old hard drive to save a diagram as a custom diagram type and copy over to the new PC. Not the end of the world.
Point 3.
I am now able to view the saved tree diagram type although some of the settings are not my original settings.
Again not the end of the world.

Point 1.
The local shop may have copied the XP folders to similarly named Windows 7 folders.
e.g.
The XP path was C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Calico Pie\Family Historian\...
So the Windows 7 path might be like C:\Users\All Users\Application Data\Calico Pie\Family Historian\...
If you find them there then copy them to C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\...
If not, then run Windows Explorer, open the Windows 7 C:\ drive, and enter Calico Pie or Text Schemes in the Search box top right, which might find the elusive folders.
Point 2.
The 'problem' only applies to Standard Diagrams whose settings had been changed.
If you had Custom Diagrams they should be recovered by Point 1 above.
Point 3.
The diagram settings should return if you can solve Point 1 above.
