Husband/Wife selection for diagrams/charts

Post by JonAxtell » 10 Aug 2008 11:10

It is currently possible to have a diagram rooted on two people - so long as they are partners. However this is only possible by selecting the two individuals from within a diagram. It should be possible to select the partners in the record view window as well.

Currently if you want this type of diagram you have to choose one of the partners, generate the diagram, then re-select the two individuals and draw the diagram again. Considering that the program knows when two people are partners or not within the diagram (as the diagram buttons are grayed out unless the two individuals selected are partners) it should be easy for the program to ensure that the diagram buttons are NOT grayed out when two people who are partners are selected in the record view window.

You can do this now if you are on the family record window, or have the family record line selected in the individual record window.

Yes, you can use the partners when in the family records but I was talking about the individual records.

I didn't know about the selection of the 'Spouse family' would bring up the diagram as asked, so thank you for letting me know about this - the help doesn't. In fact this makes a mockery of the fact that you can't select two individuals and create a diagram.

The other point about the enabling of the diagram buttons when selecting a 'family' line in the record window is that the enabling is not obvious. The buttons are not in the focus point and are a subtle change so the eye is not drawn to the change like it is to a traffic light change. A classic UI design mistake. Also not helped by the fact that in all other cases of selecting a line in an individual record, the buttons are disabled leading the user to believe that the selection has to be on the record.

A family as child or family as spouse line is a record.
