place not showing in Map Life Facts

Post by BillH » 19 Jun 2013 01:21

I'm having a bit of a problem.

I have a place in my database called Jåsund that looks like this.

Image

Right below it is another place called Jørstad.

When I go into Map Life Facts, I can find Jørstad, but not Jåsund.  The list looks like this.

Image

I've looked all through the list and can't find Jåsund anywhere.  Am I having a senior moment and missing it somehow or is there a bug?

Also, I am confused on the counts in Map Life Facts.  When I go into the plugin, it says there is a total of 2667.  When I use the Place Summary plugin it shows 2139 places.  The Address Summary plugin shows 601 addresses.  This is a total of places and addresses of 2740.

Can you help me understand the difference?  I never put an address into FH anywhere without an associated place.

Thanks!

Bill

place not showing in Map Life Facts

I had no problem finding …Jåsund, Sole, Håland, Rogaland, Norway listed in Map Life Facts.

I suspect this Place always has an Address in every Fact.
If so, it will be in the Address…Place List under the Address…Jåsund, Sole, Håland, Rogaland, Norway.

Whereas, Jørstad must have at least one Fact where it has no Address.

Statistics:
FH counts each unique Address = 601
FH counts each unique Place = 2139
Plugin counts unique Address…Place pairs = 2667
i.e. If a Place only has one associated Address, then that is only 1 pair, although 1 Address + 1 Place = 2 entries in FH.

Here is a simple example:
Address A…Place A
Address B…Place B
Address C…Place C
Address D…Place C
Address E…Place C
…Place D

Addresses = 5
Places = 4
Address…Place pairs = 6 not 5 + 4 = 9

place not showing in Map Life Facts

Mike,

Hmmm... there are four uses of Jåsund in my database.  All are the same.  It is an immigration fact that was created on one person and cut and paste to three others.  Here is what it looks like.

Image

There is no address associated with the place.

As for the counts.  Thanks for the explanation. I changed Map Life Facts to use Place Fields only instead of [Address]...Place. When I do this the total shows as 2126.  Shouldn't this be 2139 which is what the Place Summary plugin shows as the number of places?  Also, using this option, Jåsund still doesn't show in the list anywhere.

Ah, the dreaded Emigration and Immigration Facts!
These are FH anomalies, because they not only have a standard Place (PLAC tag) field with associated Address (ADDR tag) field, but also a non-standard To/From (_PLACE tag) field.

The Plugin only recognises Place (PLAC tag) fields, both when plotting and when mapping.
The reason is that it is extremely difficult to activate two links from the Emigration and Immigration Facts for their two Places on the maps.

So that explains why Jåsund is not listed in the Plugin.
It also explains the statistics, because the Plugin ignores those To/From (_PLACE tag) fields, whereas FH counts them as Places.
[EDIT]
Interestingly, the Plugin does recognise LDS Ordinance ~ Place (PLAC) fields, but FH omits these from its Places List.

I should add some explanatory Help to the Plugin for the above scenario.

Until recent changes to the way FH presented Emigration and Immigration details, even the above scheme did not work correctly.
Now those changes have been made, it might be possible to improve things in the future, but do not hold your breath.

A partial improvement would be to include those To/From (_PLACE tag) fields in the Plugin Locations List & Map per Location, but not plot them on external HTML Maps.

Mike,

That explains it. I think I do like your idea of having these show in the list and on the location map. If I understand you correctly, they would show in the location map in the main window of the plugin, but would not show in the web pages that are generated for individual. If that is what you are saying, that would work well for me. I'm not sure about other folks.

Yes, that is what I am proposing, and I should be able to add that feature to the next version of the Plugin in due course.

If users really want both Places plotted in Web Page Maps, then they would have to always use Emigrated and Immigrated in pairs, with only the Place fields used in each, and the To/From fields ignored.
This is what users have to do with other forms of Custom Travel Facts with a source and destination Place, where the To/From fields are unavailable.
