On my wife's aunts birth cirtificate it was shown that she was born in a pub and that her father not ureasonably was a licensed victualler.
Are there any records that I might be able to access to show when he became a licensed victualler and whether he owned the premises, rented them or indeed had any other Licensed properties.
I'm thinking being licensed he would have had to apply to someone for the license ( possibly Magistrates court) and those records might have survived.

If you have a copy of Herber check out page 511 in records of trades and professions, a lot seems to depend on date and location. I also found a booklet on the subject available from GenFair

It might be worth contacting the County Archive for the area the pub was in. I have licencing records for pubs in my family during the 1870s to 1890s. This was in West Yorkshire but not all the records survive. If they do it seemd they had to re-apply each year so there is a run of records.

There are two publications produced by the Federation of Family History Societies that you might find useful.
Researching Brewery and Publican Ancestors by Simon Fowler is a general introduction to the subject.
Victuallers' Licences, Records for Family and Local Historians by Jeremy Gibson and Judith Hunter gives an overview of the different types of records available and detailed lists of where to find them on a county by county basis.
Be warned, though, in some counties very few, if any, records seem to have survived.

I found details of a publican ancestor in Norwich at http://www.norfolkpubs.co.uk/index.htm
there may be similar websites for other counties. I found it by googling the ancestor's name.
