Two sets of parents

Post by ChetN » 27 Feb 2013 22:35

I have a family member whose birth parents gave her up for adoption. The new 'parents' then changed her name. Here is an example (not the real names): Mary Smith was born to John and Sally Smith who then gave her up for adoption to Fred and Ethel Jones. The Jones changed her name from Mary Smith to Lulu Jones. The Jones became the legal guardians but short of actually adopting Mary.

So, how should I enter the records to reflect both the Smith and the Jones families?

Add 'Mary Smith' as a Child to both sets of Parents.

You could also set her 'Relationship' to the Jones family as 'Foster'.

Set the 'Alternate Name' of 'Mary Smith' as 'Lulu Jones'.

Thank you for the suggestion. That should do the trick.
