Google Drive

I'm new to tablets etc. Just trying Google Drive. Put gedcom on from PC. Looked at it on tablet. Only way to open is to make it offline first. Then use EZged viewer to open, but it won't. The original copied across opens fine.

I've checked both files in notepad. The Google Drive one is gobbledygook. It appears to have had 3 bytes added which have made it unreadable as a gedcom. FH won't open it either.

Is there a solution? Do I chuck Google Drive and try something else?

It sounds as if Google Drive is deciding that the GEDCOM file is UTF-8 encoded and adding a BOM (Byte Order Mark) three character prefix.
Are there any options in Google Drive regarding UTF-8 encodings?
Do you have the FH Tools > Preferences > File Load/Save > Use ANSI Character Set ticked?

Thanks Mike, I'll have a look at that before I give up.

I had also tried google drive, but it automatically converts text file to googledocs (and you can't stop it). Also sync speed was awful.
Not had much luck yet with skydrive yet either. I may have to bite the bullet and pay for a chunk of dropbox. Having said that, the latest version of dropbox for android won't let a new user (or existing user) log-in.

No, the FH setting isn't helping.

Does Dropbox work OK?

John,

I use Dropbox for Android and have the latest version (2.3.2) and I'm able to log in.

I've cracked it. When you make s file available offline on the tablet it is automatically encrypted unless you switch it off.
Now I've found and done that it works fine.
