Crystal Reports

Post by RRicherby » 18 Aug 2006 12:46

I have just noticed that Crystal Reports has been added in the Amazon Shop link section of web page. Presumably, this list only includes items that are useful to genealogy? I have used this software for some time and often thought that it may be useful for producing reports from FH data. However, the only way I have managed to use it is to transfer data to Exel by csv files. Has anyone found an easier way of using this software with gedcom files?

Sorry that was me, I needed to order a copy and adding it there while I order, allows me to gain a few extra pence to help run FHUG.

I suspect the only way to make good use of it would be to use phpgedview to create an MySQL database and then use Crystal reports against the database.

Sledge hammers and nuts come to mind. I have had some very limited experience of Crystal Reports, it is a heavyweight in the world of report generating software.
It is is aimed at the corporate market and priced accordingly. A genealogist would use only a tiny fraction of its potential.
Unfortunately I have no real experience of user defined reports, so I am unable to help you. If you have access to a copy of Crystal Reports in your work environment, there is probably someone who generates standard report forms for use within the company. Perhaps your query would be best answered by that person.

I use Crystal at work - primarily interrogating SQL and Oracle databases. I can't see a use for it with Family Historian (but then, I'm just a beginner here), without access to the schema and sight of the tables.
