if you try to save an image to your hard drive from ancestry.co.uk then vista will prevent you from saving it other than to your my pictures (or similar folder). It won't allow you, like i prefer to do, to save it directly to a folder coming off the root of your hard drive. Even if your user account is an administrator account...
e.g. i just tried to save a bmd image to c:ancestorsbmd indexesdeaths and couldn't
To get around this when using ancestry then you need to start IE by right-clicking IE and choosing 'run as administrator'. This is due to the way vista security works
If anyone has a better method please could you advise how?
Thanks
Tony

I have not played with Vista, but I suspect you should be able to set permissions on the folders to allow IE to add data to a folder of your choice.

I would of thought so, but even giving anonymous full permission doesn't workJane said:

Not really sure what other permissions to try. Adding ancestry to the trusted site list creates far more problems too
I can live with my current solution for now, just wanted to give others a warning as they come across the problem for the first time

I was thinking about this, are you using the 'advanced' viewer on IE?
If so the problem I suspect is more to do with the fact the viewer is an activeX control. Do you have the same problem if you use the basic viewer?

Yes, the basic viewer works fineJane said:

As you say it's because it's an activeX control. The vista/ie protected mode is sandboxing the places the activex can save files (when not run as proper admin).
MS say the only options are to run as admin or turn off protected mode (which i want to avoid as it's a nice security feature). But i'm having a nose thru the registry to see if there is a list of allowed paths i can edit...
