A question for ';Pocket Genealogist'; user

Post by martync » 23 Apr 2007 12:15

I have just bought a copy of Pocket Genealogist and I know there are at least a couple of users here so I thought I'd ask your advice. The information goes across from FH well but do you just use it as a one way sync? When I go on my trip I had intended to basically take notes of any changes or additions rather than make them on my PDA and then put them directly into FH. An alternative may be to do the changes in Pocket Genealogist re-sync it to the desktop copy of my GEDCOM and then merge that into FH. I must admit that this seemed to have a bit too much scope for issues and so my original 'low tech' plan of how to work and keeping all additions and changes in FH and then migrating it's GEDCOM back 'down' to Pocket Genealogist. How do other users work?

I am intending to use Pocket Genealogist during a trip I'm going on to Ireland next month so thought I'd give myself a month to get used to Pocket Genealogist. I like it so far.

All the best,
Martyn

Martyn,

I use PG much as you propose, most of the time.

I have done significant updates to the data during family gatherings.  I then generate a GEDCOM of the changes, rather than merging directly with PG (I was rather nervous of that operation).
I was able to merge this new GEDCOM with my FH database, which allowed me to verify the changes visually before implementing.

Mike

Hello Mike,

Thanks for that, I'll try working that way.

All the best,

I have never been a fan of merging files, the results never seem to be what is required.
I have PG configured as 'Read Only' on my PDA and do all the changes in FH, I am far more comfortable with that. Also there is no chance of getting data on one and not the other, as two way sync is not supported.
I am all for keeping it simple and safe.

Derek.

Yes that was my initial thought. I suppose it depends on how much information I gather,I'm not expecting a huge amount but you live in hope! If it's only a few items I may keep manually enter them in FH when I get back, if I get a lot of information I may take a backup of my ged file and try a merge.

Thank you for the feedback,
Martyn
