Source Title amp; Type Templates

Post by Dave41 » 18 Mar 2013 15:22

I'm trying to get to grips with the Source Title Templates but I'm a little confused as to which I should use. In the AS tutorial it suggests using the following template for marriages: {KEYPERSON.SN_GN.CAPS} and {SPOUSE.SN_GN.CAPS} and {YEAR} and {SOURCETYPE} in turn. It then says that the example shows the name in the same style as FH uses in the Individual Records Window.

However, the names in the FH Individual Records Window are displayed in mixed case, and in fact the book 'Getting the most from Family Historian' recommends not capitalizing surnames.

I would appreciate any help or advice on this.

I can understand the slight confusion.

Entering Surnames in Mixed Case is certainly recommended for the reasons the 'Book' gives.
Displaying them however, is a different matter, and the 'Book' says that traditionally Surnames are shown in CAPITALS, and this is the Installation Setting in FH Tools > Preferences > General tab with Display surnames in upper case ticked.
So by default Surnames in all FH Windows, Diagrams, Reports, etc are shown in CAPITALS.

The AS Source Title Templates in the tutorial follow the above default setting.
FH does not known when Source Titles contain Surnames, so its preference setting has no effect.

Another complication is the Tools > Preferences > Records Window tab Display individuals surname first in main list that defaults to ticked.
So in some displays the Surname is first, and others not.

If you have changed the Tools > Preferences > General tab Display surnames in upper case setting, or Tools > Preferences > Records Window tab Display individuals surname first in main list setting, then by all means use a Source Title Template that matches your preference:
{KEYPERSON.SN_GN} Surname first, then Given name(s) all mixed case
{KEYPERSON.FULL} Given name(s) first, then Surname all mixed case
{KEYPERSON.FULL.CAPS} Given name(s) first mixed case, then Surname in capitals

As long as you are consistent it is not important which you choose.

Perhaps the tutorial should say in the same style as the default settings FH uses.

Thanks for your very helpful reply Mike. I must have de-selected the option to display surnames when I first started using FH, and then subsequently thought it was the default setting.[rolleyes]
