Split Tree

Post by crockford » 02 May 2013 12:11

Hello FHUG

I have version 5.0.9 and yes I am very thick (so need lots of help) can you tell me please if there is a step by step (how to) for splitting tree’s for version 5.0.9?

I have looked on this site and have found bits and pieces about “spilt tree” but all seem to aimed at versions 2,3,4, I have also looked at the book but can’t work it out, sorry.

I would be more than grateful for a step by step “idiot card” way of splitting a tree please, if it’s out there.

Kind regards
Ken

The logic for Split tree has not been changed since V2, so the only difference is making a copy of your Project to work on if you are using one.

Have you watched the tutorial and read the documentation in the Knowledge base

http://www.fhug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id ... ree_helper

What exactly are you trying to split, or export?

Many FH users contemplate splitting trees, but the general feedback on those that have split their trees is that sooner or later they come to regret doing so, and merge back again.

Often it is not split trees that are required, but tree diagrams for different branches of the family.

Finally, recent versions of FH have introduced File > Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File, which allows branches of the family tree to be easily exported, without actually splitting your tree.

Hello Jane

I have a F,H project listed as “Brown” but inside that project I have a family called “Smith” and one called “Green” and I now want to spilt the “Brown” project up so I finish up with 3 projects instead of one.

I have seen the tutorial of which you speak but because it is not the same as version 5.0.9 I can’t seem to get it to work.

I have also read The How To Use Split Tree Helper animated tutorial is based on Family Historian Version 3. Some details are no longer correct for Versions 4 & 5, which do have a GEDCOM Export feature, and Projects should use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Copy Project instead of File > Save As.

But cannot make head or tail of it which is why I asked if there was a step by step idiot card work round for thick people like me.

Regards
Ken

Could you perhaps explain exactly what you cannot get to work?

The point about V3 versus V4/5 is that Projects should use File > Project Window > More Tasks > Copy Project instead of File > Save As.
i.e.
In the Project Window select your Brown Project, and use More Tasks > Copy Project to create a Smith Project, and repeat to create a Green Project.

Then use the Split Tree Helper on Smith and Green in turn to delete the Individual Records to be removed.
Exactly what Query, or other method, you should use to choose those records depends on the relationships between the Brown, Smith, and Green family trees.

If there are links to multimedia files, images, etc., it will be important to maintain them during the creation of the new projects.

I think this is most easily done by using File, Import/Export, Export > GEDCOM File... with suitable queries to select the required records.  It is important to specify the Multimedia Records option Use Existing File Paths for External File Links and to save the resulting new GEDCOM files in the same folder as the original GEDCOM file.  At this stage each new standalone GEDCOM file will still have valid links to its images.

Then you can easily create each new project by importing the new GEDCOM file; this will automatically copy just the required multimedia files to the new project folder.

Peter is strictly correct, but if the Projects have Relative Multimedia File links then they will copy OK without breaking the links.
That is one of the major benefits of Projects - that they can be copied.
Such links can be checked/created by using the Plugin Check and Repair Media Links.

My method would leave only the relevant linked multimedia files in each new project, rather than all the multimedia files, whether linked or not.  But it is now possible to use a V5 Plugin Check for Unlinked Media to identify unlinked media to allow manual tidying up.
