Troubleshooting Upgrade problems (Simon Orde)

Post by admin » 24 Mar 2004 11:13

If you are having problems downloading or installing a Family historian upgrade here are some points to check.

When you download an upgrade, never just 'open' it when the download dialog box appears. You should always click 'Save' to save it to your hard disk first and then run it from your hard disk. If you aren't sure how to find a file once you've saved it to your hard disk, or if you aren't sure how to run programs from your hard disk, I would suggest that you select 'desktop' as the destination to save the upgrade file. Then when the download has finished, the upgrade program will be visible on your desktop and you can just double-click on it to run it.

Make sure other programs aren't running when you do the upgrade. F.H. itself, in particular, must not be running.

After the upgrade you can delete the upgrade program (the file you downloaded) if you want to. Some people like to keep it somewhere, in case they need to reinstall F.H. for whatever reason. In that case they would also need to reapply the upgrade to get back to where they were.

If the upgrade program doesn't run when you download it (as in your case), and you're quite sure that it is the upgrade program that you downloaded that you are trying to run (haven't double-clicked on the wrong shortcut or whatever), then there must be something wrong with the download process that you are using. I downloaded and checked the 2.2.4 upgrade program very recently and its fine. Options to consider in this case are:

(a) Just keep trying. Someone recently mailed me to say that it worked on their 4th attempt.

(b) Try downloading the file from a different web site. The 2 sites are Its exactly the same file that you're downloading; so it doesn't make any difference which you get it from. So why try another site you might ask? Its quite possible that your Internet Service Provider has set you up to use a 'proxy server' which caches frequently accessed files from given web sites. If the upgrade program has become corrupted on the proxy server somehow, you may just keep downloading the same corrupted file, even though the original version is perfectly OK. By using a different site you can get round this possible problem (thank you to Jane Taubman for suggesting this possible scenario).

(c) Talk to your Internet Service Provider and ask them what the problem could be. The upgrade program is only about 2.6Mb which is not a large file to download, even if you don't have broadband. Is it possible that the connection is being dropped before the download has completed, or something like that?
