* Black Fill in Spouse Box

I have checked and rechecked. I went through all the diagram options. Clearly, I am missing something obvious.

I selected "no fill" for the boxes, but it remains black filled for the spouses. How do change this?

That is not Box Fill but Box Shadow as shown below:
So it depends on how you are selecting the box features as to exactly where you need to make the change.
