Saving Reports

Post by Johnr65 »

I've now added Adobe to FH7 to print/save reports but it shows 'tools' on both sides of the report, it didn't happen before, so is there a way to remove the 'tools?'

Also it prints/saves to the 'Documents' folder when I want it to go to 'Downloads'. I've saved/printed 4 separate narrative reports today and they all want to go to 'Documents' -it doesn't remember where it last saved to?

John, please explain step by step what you are doing.

It is the FH option Save Report As... > PDF File... that decides where to save the PDF report.
That is usually in the Project Public subfolder as illustrated below, but Browse... lets you choose.
Are you saying FH saves the Reports in the Documents folder?
Note that you can tick Open PDF with default viewer to automatically open the Report in Adobe Reader.

Yes, this is the latest design of the Adobe Reader program. You may not have updated it before your PC reset.
In Adobe Reader, click the x shown in your screenshot to hide the tools. They cannot be removed.

Use the Menu top left and choose Save as... to select where Adobe Reader saves the Report.
However, I don't understand why you need to save it again.

That's Adobe Acrobat Reader that you're looking at. It changed quite recently - I didn't realise that it had ,until I opened it up to find, as you have there, an interface that throws away everything that went before. I keep losing the magnifying glass to zoom with because it's now in a place where no other software puts it.

I can't find anything to alter the positioning of those side-panels. :(

Found elsewhere
To go back to the OLD VERSION [of Acrobat Reader] click on Menu, Click on Disable New Acrobat Reader (4 options above Preferences), click Restart and enjoy what we all are used to.
No doubt it only postpones the evil day but maybe it will be slightly better.

John originally posted (in a different post - viewtopic.php?t=22714) about PDF opening in Word since his PC was reset.
I advised on how to download and install Acrobat Reader, so the basis of THIS post from John, is how to deal with the tools/sidebars in Acrobat reader, and as such, that has nothing to do with FH7.

The side toolbar can be removed using the cross as shown below, but it looks like the floating toolbar cannot be removed.

Mike has advised on how to deal with the location that the FH PDF printer uses.

The 'Menu' that Adrian mentions is at the top left of Acrobat Reader, if you select these two items I have underlined, you will be invited to restart Acrobat Reader and you can then open PDF's with an interface you are probably more used to

Neil, that is what I said in my original reply!

John is also asking about where FH saves the PDF.

John, it seems you are not using the Save Report As... > PDF File... command.
Instead, I think you are using the Print... button and setting Printer Name to Family Historian PDF.
Am I correct?
It would really help us if you explained what commands you are using.

As I said, if you use the Browse... button you can choose the Downloads folder.
FH will remember that until you perform some other file load/save operation whereupon the new folder becomes the default. Sorry, but not much can be done about that.

Yes, correct Mike, and I noted that in my reply.

No matter if John Prints or uses Save Report as, I've addressed the PDF sidebars issue that Adrian also mentioned, with screenshots that will hopefully show John where to get back to an Acrobat Interface he remembers.

Open Adobe Acrobat Reader. The "Menu" icon is the stack of 3 plates/hamburger as pointed at by the arrow.

Click on that and the Reversion / Disable option is 4 options above the Preferences option.

Then the side-panels / floating toolbar et al will vanish with the reversion to the previous version. Or at least, that's how it worked for me.

My acrobat reader 'allows' me to disable the new version but still has a panel down the rhs.
It seems that if I use 'Save As' and create a report which I've called Family Historian, I can publish it as such from the Publish Menu in Custom Reports and it looks like the previous text report before Adobe got involved!

Yes I was using Print, Mike, as the Save As isn't shown but is in the More category.

Yes - misleading, I now realise, to say the side-panels / floating toolbar et al will vanish with the reversion to the previous version.

The new side-panels vanish but the previous version always had a side-panel on the right. In the PDF screenshot above, it's a single icon wide although if you click the left-pointing arrow there, it will give the icons plus text. Click it again to revert to a single column.

Either way round, the zoom controls are in the place the majority of programs have them.

John, if you don't like Adobe Acrobat Reader there are many free alternatives.
Just Google search for Free PDF Viewer for Windows and take your pick.
You can also view PDF files in your preferred browser: Firefox, Chrome, etc.

Once you've decided which is your preferred PDF viewer, I can explain how to make that your default PDF viewer so that when you tick the Open PDF with default viewer option in FH your preferred PDF viewer will be used.

John,
Mike was suggesting that you choose a different PDF viewer as an alternative to Adobe. A PDF viewer is completely independent of FH.

You have now referred to Publish > Custom Reports, which contains a list of any report types in which you have customised the settings and then saved them using Save Report As > Custom Report Type. It has nothing to do with PDF viewers!

This thread is flip-flopping between:
1) FH Publish > Report options to save in PDF format.
2) Adobe Acrobat PDF viewer program.
I suspect John is mixing up the two features and the multiple replies from so many people.

Mike when you said choose any 'Free PDF Viewer for Windows' I don't know which one to choose but any one that looks like the one previous to this new one from Adobe! I don't want the print out to have tools along each side, just the information.

John, I suggest you try making your preferred browser the PDF viewer.
I've tried Firefox, Chrome & Microsoft Edge. They all provide simple zoom and page controls without extra tools.

Use Windows File Explorer and in your Downloads folder find a PDF file that currently opens in Adobe Acrobat.
Right-click that PDF file and choose Open with > Choose another app as shown below:

Then in How do you want to open this file? choose your preferred browser (Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge).
Tick Always use this app to open .pdf files as shown below. Then click OK.
Thereafter, your PDF files will open in the chosen browser instead of Adobe Acrobat.

Seems to me that all the browsers have a panel down one side or along the top which is what I don't want? I hate Edge and wish I could remove it permanently. Microsoft seem to force Edge, Cortana and McAffee on us?

Try viewing the document in full screen mode within your browser (typically F11 -- and F11 or ESC to exit full-screen mode).

Microsoft have nothing to do with McAfee -- that's typically something foisted on you by your PC manufacturer and easily removed.

The EU are working to make Edge, Cortana etc optional -- although it's easy enough to use an alternative browser to Edge; and Cortana is easily ignored.

John, I think you are asking for the impossible!
Every application, including Family Historian and Windows File Explorer, has to have toolbars somewhere.
Otherwise, how do you control what it does?
That will also be the case for any free PDF viewer you download and install.

Even in F11 fullscreen mode, there will be a small toolbar to adjust Zoom, turn pages, etc.

May I ask what browser do you use?

I find Firefox has a minimal toolbar, especially in F11 fullscreen mode.

I wonder if John is assuming that the toolbars are part of the document itself? In a recent post he said "I don't want the print out to have tools along each side, just the information".

John, if you print the PDF document (to a real physical printer) the toolbars won't be printed. It's just like viewing a Word document. You see toolbars when you view it on the screen but they are not part of the document itself and don't get printed.

I use Opera as my default browser.
I was very happy with the original pdf before Adobe changed it.
I've tried Firefox instead, and as Lorna says the toolbars don't show on the 'actual' document that I send to others.

Cole Valley Girl, I can't remove McAfee -it's still in my toolbar as an icon even though I don't have an account with them.
