media files saved as .gfif
Recently. when I download a file from Ancestry, although it says it is a jpeg, it saves it as xxx.gfif. This apparently is a standard format but FH does not recognise it. I can download the file, open it in Infranview and re-save it as .jpeg but this is a pain. Is there a way I can get Ancestry to save files directly as .jpeg or get FH to recognise .gfif?

Re: media files saved as .gfif
I have never heard of .gfif files and a Google search provides no answers.
Maybe they are .gif files that have been misnamed and are supported by FH.

Re: media files saved as .gfif
This is puzzling, I can't find information on .gfif files - do you mean .gif?
.gif is a common graphics files, often an animated graphic.
There is a .jfif file format, a compressed jpeg file.
I have tried to emulate what you are seeing, but Ancestry downloads .jpg files for me.
What operating system do you have?

It could be a typo for jfif, a simplified version of the jpeg format.

Re: media files saved as .gfif
John, that is referring to a filter process not a file type.

Re: media files saved as .gfif
That puzzled me too. I wonder if they are standard jpeg images that have been processed using that filter process?

@phende
Rather than opening and saving the file in IrfanView, have you tried just renaming the file to change the file extension?

Re: media files saved as .gfif
Apologies. They come down as .jfif files and FH does not like it. I have not tried changing the extension as I don’t normally display them but re-saving directly without an extension as jpeg does not work because that does not change the name.
I am on the latest update of Win11 and have felt for some time that I have less control of the machine than I used to.
Actually, I am not sure what package is being used to display these downloads though I have set Irfanview as the default.

This should help: https://www.howtogeek.com/844435/how-to ... ws-or-mac/
Short answer - Use either the Windows 'Paint' or 'Photos' app to load the files and save to .jpg format for use in FH.

With more research I have found that Edge is the culprit, saving graphics files in jfif format by default. You can apparently do a registry edit to get it to use jpeg but I have not tried that yet.
Re: media files saved as .gfif
I don't think that is 'normal'. I'm using Edge on multiple machines and none of them save graphics files as jfif. Maybe an app has changed settings.

How are you saving the files from Ancestry? It sounds like you might be saving the displayed image rather than using the Ancestry download option.

Re: media files saved as .gfif
I am certain this flaw has been introduced by one of the recent updates to Edge. The fix has been on various discussion groups for at least 3 years when Microsoft were claiming it was probably 3rd party software that caused the problem. Very unlikely in my case with my very narrow field of interests.
The fix is:
Open regedit
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg
In the panel on the right, look at "Extension". Mine had the entry .jfif
Double click on Extension and change it to .jpg
Exit regedit. Job done - for how long I don't know, but images are now downloading as previously.
