FH7 indication of relationship for "non-direct" ancestors

Post by Zhukov » 07 Aug 2023 05:05

I am using Family Historian 7. My query is:

In my FH7 records, I have, for example, information about DEM and FH7 (below her name and years of birth and death) has a notation that DEM has “no direct relationship” to me.
This is correct, there is no “direct” relationship.

However DEM is indirectly related to me. I also have, for research purposes, a copy of my family tree in Ancestry and, as regards DEM, it shows that DEM is related to me as she is the “niece of husband of (my) maternal grandmother” (which is correct).

Is it possible to change a setting in Family Historian 7 to get, for a person like e.g. DEM who is related to me but in a rather roundabout sort of way, a similar indication of relationship (i.e. not just an indication of “no direct relationship”).

If a similar query has already been covered previously in the discussions, I would be grateful for any direction to same.
Regards, Des

Clarification of one aspect of my query.
• Ancestry’s indication is that DEM is the “niece of husband of (my) maternal grandmother”.
• This particular “husband” of my maternal grandmother was her second husband.
• I am a descendant of my maternal grandmother and her first husband (who was my maternal grandfather).

To find the relationship(s) between two people, select them both in the Records window and then use Tools > How Related. You can choose the maximum number of relationships, up to 9, (as they may be related in more than one way). Make sure that the box for 'Blood Relationships Only' is NOT ticked.

A summary of the relationship will be shown in the small window and you can then choose to view the relationship graphically or view the report which sets out the relationship step by step.

However, indirect relationships cannot be displayed in the Focus window or the Records window, probably because some of them would be far too long to fit.

If you are only looking for the relationship to yourself and you are the file root, you can use the How Related tool from the Focus Window to find your relationship to the currently displayed person.

Thanks genuinely John. Most times (as the File Root person) I am trying to see the relationship to me of someone else in my FH7 records (especially someone who might be distantly and indirectly related to me), but not always. At times I am trying to see if e.g. there is a relationship between 2 other persons who keep showing up together at the same residential premises in the various Census returns or who are recorded, several times (over the years) as the joint owners of various businesses. Des,

The "How Related" tool can be used to show the relationship between any two individuals in your project. You as root do not need to be one of the two individuals.

... which Lorna gave guidance on in her post two before mine. My post was to point out that if you just wanted the relationship to the file root there was a quicker way.
