Migration of Projects and Settings

Post by PhilipR »

Good Afternoon - Australian time!!

I have just purchased a new laptop and want to migrate FH7 to the new device.

My Media and Project files are one OneDrive which is already on the new machine.

My Backup folder is also one OneDrive. I have not yet loaded FH7 onto the new machine. I was advised, by Mike Wise to start a new post to migrate the program over and avoid any potential problems.

I have enclosed screenshots of the existing file locations for reference.

Thank you
Philip

Philip, have you studied the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Copy and Migration Guide?

If you have customised any Diagrams, Reports, Fact Sets, Queries, Plugins, Records Window Columns, Property Box tabs, etc, etc, then you will need to follow the Copying Program Settings advice. Those settings are NOT included in the Project Backups.

Have you synchronised your OneDrive Microsoft Account between the two PC?
If so, you should see exactly the same folders & files in the Family Historian Projects folder on both PC.

Therefore, if all your Media files are within the Project folders then only the Project Location needs to be set on the new PC as explained in the Copying Project Data section, but you don't need to copy any data as OneDrive has done that.

Hello Mike

I have read thru the FHUG Knowledge article and believe that I was OK to load FH7 onto this computer as no Query report etc setting have been altered.

As I am now only using one computer (Laptop) I have not synced theData and Media files. My update files are in the link (previously advised) and appear to be up to date.

I have downloaded FH7 from the Family Historian as advised by Ros at Family Historian Support but have a few issues.

1. The project window shows my project (Reiflan Tree) last dated last updated 1.1.1971 as per the attached screenshot "Project Window 5.8.23".

2. When clicking on Reiflan Tree to open the project I got message as per the screenshot "Alert Window 5.8.23".

3. I have also included a screenshot "Data Media File 5.8.23" showing Gedcom files for computers 54FRJG8 and OE15TU3 which are the two computers that have been reset for sale.

I believe that my problem may be that FH does not know my file locations because I can't get into the program to change them.

Can you please put me on the right path before I go any further?

Have you got your Family Historian Folder on ONE Drive set to "Always keep on this device"

Philip, that looks like the same old OneDrive sync problems you had before.

Try renaming the Reiflan Tree-DESKTOP-OE15TU3 file to Reiflan Tree
That is the one with the latest Date modified but is smaller than the other Gedcom File.

Only if you haven't followed the same advice I gave before in the long Media thread.

Mike

FH Project is one Onedrive - setting is as advised. As you say we discussed this some time ago.

I changed the name of the file you recommended and all works well.

Do I need to delete the file "Reiflan Tree-Desktop 54FRJG8"?

If you are happy that the recovered Project holds your latest data then yes delete the Reiflan Tree-Desktop-54FRJG file.
