Creating a Source Template

Post by potga » 18 Jul 2023 11:20

Hello. Using the free trial of V7. I create a new template and add a couple of fields. Add it to a project and try and use but the fields I added are not visible. Any idea why? Is it because I am using the free trial version?

It's nothing to do with you using the free version.

Can you post a screenshot of where you're not seeing what you expect (instructions at Forum Usage Tips -- scroll down to the section on attachments.

And have you found the Knowledge Base info on Sources and Citations? Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for New Users) and Adding, Customising and Sharing Source Templates in Version 7 may be of use to you.

Close the Source Template Definition Editor and check the Source Template Definitions for the Custom collection.
Does your Blah Blah template have two green ticks on the right for Custom and Used or does Used say mod?

If it says mod then I suspect you have first used the template without metafields and have added them later, thus the Template Definition is out of sync with the Template Record.
You need to select Blah Blah and click the Compare/Sync with Source Template Record... button.
Then select the rows with a red X on the right, click View/Sync... and Perform Task.
Check the Help buttons at each step for more advice.

It’s one of the more confusing aspects of templated sources that often trips up newcomers to FH7.

The templated source ecosystem has three distinct elements. At the top, there is the definition, which is available to all your projects. You generally create a new template (which is local to your project) from the definition, but they can also be created from scratch. When you edit either a template or a definition, any changes do not propagate automatically, so additional tools are required to keep them synchronised.

It sounds complicated, but it’s well-described in both the program help and the FHUG KB, and enables templates to be kept consistent between projects much more easily than would be the case if templates were purely local to one project.

You need to enter something in the four fields of the Source Template Definition Editor: Record Title Format, Bibliography Format, Footnote Format and Short Footnote Format (see example in screenshot). Otherwise there is nothing to "print" for your source citation, and hence I assume why your fields for District and Book/Page are not showing when creating a new source. Make sure you follow the instructions of the other posters as well and use the Compare/Sync functionality to ensure that your changes are reflected in your project.

You were correct. Didn’t have the 2 ticks. Got it working now. Thanks.
