Two wives but they're the same person

Post by Peter2023 » 26 Mar 2023 16:14

I have a person displaying on diagrams and focus window and properties box as having two wives, but the ladies concerned are in fact the same person (with different children listed in each case (one has the correct 10 children, and the other has only one of those 10). All other information is the same.

I at first thought that I must have entered the wife twice as two separate people, but there is only one of her in the Individuals list.

There is only one of her husband in the Individuals list too.

This file was an import from RM9 - I followed all of the directions. It may be that I had dodgy data in RM9 and the transfer has made it surface.

Anyhow, I have what I have but I don't know how to eliminate duplication that appears in the focus window/on diagrams/in the properties box that does not appear in the Individuals list.

It's as though I (somehow) told RM9 that they got married twice.

So I need to eliminate one of the wives, but I can't merge the two wives or remove the "first" or "second" wife as there is only one wife appearing in the places where I might normally go to merge/delete.

Another issue is that the lonely-only child of the "second" wife is my line of descent in my file. The same child in "marriage 1" (correctly shown with 9 siblings) has no descendants noted.

I do have two separate individuals for that child. I tried merging them but that did not make the two marriages go away.

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

It sounds as if you have two family records for the same couple; check using the Families tab in the Records Window. (Use View > Other Records List > Families if the Families tab is not showing in the Records Window).

Correcting Duplicate Spouses/Families explains how to fix it.

Thank you! I thought my file was a goner but that worked like a charm! Found another duplicate family too. Thanks again.
