AS v7.7.1 Display Problem

Post by McHooty » 15 Mar 2023 17:06

Hi Nick

Downloaded v7.7.1 last night and now have errors with the display. The Census History, Add Parent, Add Spouse, Add Sibling, Add Child fields are all cut short and not widening even when populated. This is irrespective of whether Census, Birth, Baptism, Marriage, Death or Burial is selected. My Windows Display resolution is 1920 x 1080 and I do have a Custom Scale Factor of 175% set (although this has not been an issue previously).

Hope you can help

Michael

What I find puzzling is that your screenshot of AS running doesn't look too different than my 100% scaling on 1920 x 1080. If I set my desktop to 175% then AS can't display as much information as that. This is how it looks on my screen at 175% scaling and font size 8. Notice how far over the toolbar buttons stretch.

If you go to tools->Customise, which font and font size are you using?

If you change the font size so AS rescales, are the lists still truncated?

If you move the slider between the main panel and right panel, do the lists remain truncated?

Is that Windows 10?

If you right click on the Ancestral Sources shortcut and then choose Properties and then Compatibility, nothing should be ticked and if you click on Change high DPI settings make sure nothing is ticked in there either.

Must start with a confession. My desktop is not running at 175%. Windows Display Settings show 175%, but is greyed out. If I go into Custom Scaling I am at 120%, and no matter what I change that to the Display Settings show a grey 175%. So, apologies for that.
In AS Font is Tahoma size 8. Increasing the size still has truncated lists, but confusingly going back to Tahoma 8 now shows a wider list, though still truncated. Moving the slider has no effect. Nothing is ticked in the shortcut Properties.

If I amend my Custom Scaling to 115% AS displays as intended, but going to 120% and I get truncated lists :?.

Strange that it was the update that triggered this, but no matter. I can live with 115% so thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

The standard scaling options in Windows 10 and 11 are 100%, 125%, 150%, 175% and these are found under the display settings. My laptop recommends 150%, my PC 100%. I normally prefer 100% but have been using 125% on my laptop as it helps me to check AS displays correctly in two different scaling modes.

The custom settings are in a separate section and the page warns not to use these. I've not really messed around with these settings but you may be better to settle for either 100 or 125 using the standard scaling settings rather than use the custom settings. I have made improvements to the way AS deals with scaling over recent months but I've only tested with the standard scaling.

Anyway I'm glad the issue seems to be resolved.

Best wishes

The custom scaling is usually greyed out when the custom scale has been changed but the user has not signed out and back in again to apply the new custom scale. It does say that in the settings screen. So maybe that is part of the problem.
