Duplicated records

Post by MS1960 » 27 Feb 2023 16:11

Hello,

I've been using FH for a few years now, largely without problems, though I haven't used it to its full extent. However, I've recently realised that I have entered some data incorrectly.
Firstly, I have entered one relative under her birth name AND under her step-father's name, so her entire record is duplicated - how do I delete the latter without losing the former?

Secondly, in a couple of instances where I have ancestors whose name spellings have changed from generation to generation, I've stupidly put them in twice under the different spellings, when what would have been more sensible would have been to stick to the name as it is now and put a note in the notes field for the earlier generations where the name has been spelt differently to simply state that. Does anyone know how to fix these issues, please?

I've been through the User Manual and thought maybe Merge and Compare would work, but I found it a bit confusing and wasn't sure.

Many thanks!

Welcome to the FHUG.

I'm not sure why you posted in the Web Site Usage forum which discusses issues with this FHUG website.
Anyway, I've moved it to the FH General Usage forum which is more appropriate.

The usual convention for the Primary Name field of each person is their Birth Name as recorded on the Birth Certificate.
Next to the Name box is the more (+)... link which opens a dialogue that allows Alternate Names to be added and it is possible to add Notes and Citations if necessary.

It sounds like you have created multiple Individual records for the same person.
In that case, they will have separate entries in the Individuals tab of the Records Window and thus have different Record Id.
Can you please confirm that?

How difficult it will be to fix depends on the family relatives that you have connected to those individual records.
i.e. Children, Spouses, Parents and subsequent generations...
Can you please tell us how many generations are linked to the duplicated people.

The Edit > Merge/Compare Records... command will be the way to go but may get complex en route.
It will be important to ensure you take regular Project Backups in case the merging goes astray.
