Edit a source title?
I made a typo in the title of a source and am wondering if there's any place I can edit it? I need to change 1868 to 1768... I've looked everywhere and can't see where I might do it. Believe it was one I created with Ancestral Sources. Is my only choice to just delete and create it again? See image below... Thanks...

Re: Edit a source title?
In your screen shot you are looking at the All tab in the property box for that source. Go to the Main tab and the title is the first line. You can change it there.

Do as Bill says, or alternatively, click the little "+" sign in the left-hand pane of your screenshot. This should drop-down your source fields, and you can single-click in the Title field and edit directly.

Re: Edit a source title?
Isn't the answer different if it's a templated source, rather than a generic source?
For a generic source, follow the advice above. But if it's a templated source, the title is made up of individual template items and cannot be directly editted (it's greyed out if I recall correctly). Instead, you have to find the individual item that supplies the date to the record title and update that. Then the record title updates automatically.

Re: Edit a source title?
You're right, it's a bit more complicated. You can have FH auto-generate the title, or you can manually enter it. Either way, clicking the "+" sign as advised above will drop down all the options, including the template (which will show as another "+"). If you click in the title field, it will appear yellow if you have auto-generated it, but you get the option to re-generate it (if you've changed the underlying data as you mention), or manually edit it. Clearly if the title is incorrect because the underlying data is incorrect, you'll want to change that and regenerate the title.AdrianBruce wrote: ↑28 Nov 2022 11:06Isn't the answer different if it's a templated source, rather than a generic source?

Re: Edit a source title?
Thanks Adrian. I'd missed that the title isn't greyed out, it's yellow and can be editted if you choose the right option.
Also, I just found that on at least one occasion, I had to explicitly click the generate icon to regenerate the title correctly. I experimented (I'm a generic source user, as you can probably tell) with Civil Registration Index templated sources. If I change the Region via the drop down on the Main tab for the Source-Record, the Title auto-regenerates. If I repeat the process via the All tab and change the Region via the drop down, the Title doesn't change - I had to go to the Main tab, unchoose Autogenerate Record Title and then rechoose it before it regenerated. Whether there is a reason for this, I'm not sure...
(Being a generic source user, I feel it's an important point that the Title is normally automatically compiled from the templated items - I apologise if I'm teaching template source users to suck eggs!)

Re: Edit a source title?
Yes, it was a templated source... As seen below, I've edited the title, but 1868 still appears:
I had hoped to find an edit option on the right click menu, but no such luck:
And yes, I did fix the date everywhere else.

Re: Edit a source title?
I figured that must be the trick, but can't imagine where to find that individual item.
At this point, I may just delete and redo and proofread it more closely.

Re: Edit a source title?
Just in case this is of interest. When Ancestral Sources first built in support for templated sources, by default AS generated the source title using the usual source title template that AS has always used. There wasn't a way to trigger FH to generate the title automatically. But if any of the source fields were edited in FH then the AS title was replaced by one generated by FH. I liaised with Calico Pie who built in a new feature so that by default AS now doesn't generate a source title and instead FH automatically generates it when the file is loaded into FH after the entry is created in AS. It is also possible to specify a title for a templated source and fix it so it won't get updated in FH. So AS now has 3 options:
Generated by AS: can update in FH - AS generates the title but it will get replaced by a FH title if the fields in the source get modified in FH.
Generated by AS: no update in FH - AS generates the title and FH will leave this alone
Generated by FH - AS doesn't save a title and FH generates it when it loads up.
The last option is the one I'd recommend for those using templated sources. It may be worth checking you have this selected.

Re: Edit a source title?
Thanks, Nick - I had the first selected, but have now selected the third option.

Re: Edit a source title?
Teresa, something very odd is happening with that Source Record Title.
I have performed similar edits to the Templated Fields and the Title of a Templated Source.
In every case the Source: ... [RecId] bar across the top automatically mimics the Title exactly.
In your screenshot, not only is the year wrong, but the order and layout of the text is completely different.
e.g.
Source: Marriage <place> (<church>) <date> <couple>
Title: Marriage of <couple>, <church>, <place>, <date>
So why is the Source: not synchronised with the Title:?
Try closing FH and opening again to see if that fixes things.
Is there something not quite right with the Source Template? Is it synchronised with the Source Definition?
I'm not clear about how changing the AS option will impact FH in that way.
FH ought to be able to sort itself out whatever AS option was chosen.

Re: Edit a source title?
I'm assuming your question was rhetorical? Because if you don't know the answer, I certainly don't
Closing FH, restarting my laptop, and reopening FH didn't work, so I just deleted and redid. Way easier than wasting half a precious day off trying to diagnose where I went wrong in the first place.

Re: Edit a source title?
What is the definition for your source template's 'Record title format'?
It wouldn't impact this issue, but it is worth having it set for future entries.

Re: Edit a source title?
Nick,
Thanks for the clarification!!! Sometimes the terminology is a little overwhelming to keep straight. For me, a visual is always better - I really appreciate the screenshot. Will check my template again. One of these days, I'll get it right on the first or second go, rather than the 50th
