This seems a simple question and I'm surprised I have not come across it before, so I suspect I am having a senior moment!
Marriage, how do I override a parent with someone else?
I can overtype the parent but the ID stays the same and if I go to the new person in the drop down list, the select button is greyed out.
There must be many situations on remarriage, e.g. where a child grows up with a new Dad who takes full responsibility without official adoption, especially pre 1900s.

When you select an individual or their spouse and add them to the entry, if they have more than 1 set of parents a dialogue pops up to ask which family you are selecting. The parents in the chosen family are then added.
I am aware that for marriages the parents need to be added first, they can't be added directly into the boxes. There was a lot of complexity to doing this and so at the time that I added support for marriages I made my task easier in this way. It is on my long-list to revisit this one day.

Thanks for the info, so that suggests I create/add a 2nd parent, presumably I can "detach" again later or just leave or use the "wrong marriage parent" and swap any facts afterwards to the documented father.

If you don't want to add them as actual parents then don't. I assumed that was what you wanted to do. Just untick the parent that AS has selected and manually enter the name in the source text before saving. You could then add citations for them afterwards in FH.

Thanks again, I will experiment on a copied project. At present I am inclined to use the "wrong" parent in AS and then copy/delete any facts to the "documented" parent. I suspect in most cases it will just be the occupation.
