Adding a Marriage

Post by Woodg » 12 Sep 2022 07:14

Hi All,

Forgive me for asking such a basic question, but I've looked at the forum, knowledgebase and FH7 help and I am stuck.

I can't add a marriage! Oh, I can add a "relationship" easily, but "marriage" is not an option I can see. The Add Fact button on the property window has Add Relationship (along with Add Birth, Add Death, etc).

The More fact types... gives me types such as Marriage Licence, Marriage Contract, etc, but not plain old marriage. I know marriage is somewhat old fashioned to some, but still...

The Youtube videos and the FH 7 help show a Add Marriage fact, but not Add Relationship as I have.

The FH7 Sample Project has Relationships only, too.

Have I got a setting wrong? It must be something simple, but I just can't see it!

Thanks,

Glenn

Glen,

This is caused by having a copy of the standard Marriage Fact with a "Relationship" label in a higher-ranking Fact Set. This is eclipsing the standard Marriage Fact, and will apply across all projects, just as you are seeing.

The easiest way to fix it is to select Tools > Fact Types... from the main menu. Ensure Fact Set is set to <All>, find the Relationship Fact, and click on Hide. The standard Marriage fact should now reappear.

Thanks Mark,

Now my ancestors are married! I'm no longer a b*****d (although some of my family would disagree, but I digress).

This all may have come about from issues I had with Defacto relationships. Jane and Mike helped me, but I had copied the Marriage fact to create a Relationship fact. Mike had warned me that copying would override the Marriage fact, but I had forgotten all about this change. Doh.

Again, thanks for your help.

Yes, see De facto relationships (20949).
Rather than Hide that Marriage/Relationship copy, I suggest you Delete it as it was purely an experiment.

Hi Mike,

Thanks. I have now deleted it, and also made a note about re-creating it manually (not Copying) after I've completed my migration to FH7.

I'm still progressing on my move to FH7 but unimportant things like work keep getting in the way.
