Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Addresses

Post by Woodg » 05 Sep 2022 07:58

Hi All,

Still progressing on the move from Relatively Yours 3. I have an issue with addresses and I think it is an issue with the RY3 created GEDCOM (Not FH7) but would appreciate any comments.

Address, such as Residences, can be exported as individual items such as:
2 ADDR
3 CITY The Gums
3 STAE Queensland
3 POST 4406
3 CTRY Australia

This imports as individual fields and it shows up in FH7 on the All Tab like this:
address.png
address.png (5.84 KiB) Viewed 751 times
but the address doesn't appear on the Facts Tab because the "Address" field is empty.

If I select the combined "field" which exports as:

2 ADDR 12 Susan Lane
3 CONT Annandale
3 CONT New South Wales
3 CONT 2038
3 CONT Australia

I get a concatenated address all in the address field which then also shows up on the All Tab, but displays like this "¶The Gums¶Queensland¶4406¶Australia" and on the Fact Tab like this "The GumsQueensland4406Australia".

Now, I don't have many of these so can easily correct them manually, but if anyone knows a way to fix it automatically that would be helpful.

Glenn

I think the only way to fix them automatically is to write a custom Plugin, but if only a few it would not be worth it.
So change them by hand using whatever scheme you have chosen for your Place and Address fields.
i.e. Some of those Address subfields such as City, State, and Country belong in the Place field not the Address.

Thanks Mike. Manual correction it is then. After reading the Knowledgebase articles on Places and Addresses (I did this before even purchasing FH) I decided to keep them separate. For me, the Place is the most important piece of data - just town, state/county, country. The Address is just a nice extra. Geocoding to the Place level is enough for me. And I can always use your Rearrange Place and Address parts to move things around if I change my mind.

Thanks,

Glenn
