* Exporting to Wikitree
Exporting to Wikitree
I would like to export something akin to the Individual Narrative Report to a format compatible with Wikitree markup. This would include primarily sources formatted correctly for Wikitree biographies using the <ref> tags.
Is this possible in FH7?

Re: Exporting to Wikitree
Many things are possible in FH V7 but may involve using advanced techniques such as writing Plugins, etc.
Wikitree formatted reports are not a standard feature of FH.
Please explain how you intend to use such Wikitree formatted biographies.
Would it be easier to export your Project to Wikitree and let it produce the reports?

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply.
It is not possible to import FH projects (or GEDCOMs) into Wikitree. Their profiles use a style of HTML markup which can be edited in free-form by users. What I would like to do is be able to take the data from my FH project and generate text which is suitable to be pasted into a Wikitree profile.
A more fulsome version of Greg Shipley's Biography Generator (https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/shipley1223/Bio.html) is probably what I am aiming for. Here is an exmample of what it can generate:

I would not expect a plugin or report to be able to generate the Wikitree IDs (although if I had these as attributes in my project, maybe?), but the rest of the generated text with linked sources (<ref> tags) is what I'm wanting to generate. Shipley's Biography Generator is probably a bit on the lean side, hence my wanting to recreate something closer to FH's Individual Narrative report.== Biography ==

The Wikitree Help at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:How_to_Use_WikiTree section 2.4 Do you have a GEDCOM? says:
"If you have used other family tree websites or software it's likely that you can export a GEDCOM file and upload it here."
Why is that not an option for you?
Regarding Narrative Reports, try the Save Report As... > Text File... option to create a plain text file (.txt).
That can then be edited with a plain text editor such as Notepad++ perhaps with macros to perform standard edits.
e.g. Source references take the form (*3) that could be converted to <ref>Source 3</ref>
As you say, generating Wikitree IDs is a challenge.

I'm not Sarah, but what the Help doesn't explain there is that you can only bring in a small gedcom with a few people at a time and then each has to be verified...it's a slow and painful process.tatewise wrote: ↑15 Jul 2022 13:11The Wikitree Help at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:How_to_Use_WikiTree section 2.4 Do you have a GEDCOM? says:

Re: Exporting to Wikitree
Teresa is correct. There is limited capability to actually import GEDCOMs into Wikitree, and it is only used to compare against existing profiles already in the connected tree. Furthermore, I don't think that Wikitree generates report-like narratives from the "GEDCOMpare" report (hence my asking for this capability from the FH end!). Even if it did, I think it would only import facts and notes not in the markup language. Here is their explanation from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:UploadGedcom:
I will experiment with the FH text file export option for reports.
As for the Wikitree IDs, I do use a person attribute in my project to record the ID (along with Find A Grave and FamilySearch Family Tree IDs). I haven't explored how this might be exported or incorporated into reports, though -- at this stage, it is just for my data recording purposes. But if it could somehow be incorporated into an export for Wikitree biographies which produces a link like [[Roosevelt-11|Anna Roosevelt]], that would be very handy! If you have used another family tree website you can probably export a GEDCOM with your family tree. Upload it here for a special "GEDCOMpare" report with suggested matches — automatic search results showing family members who might already have profiles on WikiTree.
Your family tree won't be imported. Trees aren't imported because WikiTree is one tree that we all share. However, GEDCOMpare enables you to easily import data from your file to create and improve profiles for individual family members.
I will experiment with the FH text file export option for reports.

Re: Exporting to Wikitree
I accept it may be somewhat tedious but that WikiTree help says "GEDCOMpare enables you to easily import data from your file to create ... profiles for individual family members." i.e. It imports GEDCOM data to create individual records.
What I don't understand is where the biographical profiles are attached if individuals have not been imported to Wikitree.
Anyway, I cannot think of any way that FH can easily produce those profiles in WikiTree markup.
They would appear to be plain text files, so a report saved in Text format seems the only avenue worth exploring.

Re: Exporting to Wikitree
Yes, I agree. So I suppose we are now moving outside the scope of FH's in-built capabilities... but I am curious how one would go about building a plugin or otherwise making changes to the output report text externally to FH so that it is suitable to paste into Wikitree.
Is there any information in the knowledge base or elsewhere to further explore what Jane is suggesting here? Or am I totally overthinking something that can be edited in a few keystrokes from the text file?

There's a snippet in the KB about writing to Word.

Re: Exporting to Wikitree
It would be useful to see a Text File saved from a Narrative Report that is close to what you want for WikiTree.
It should include samples of key data like Sources and WikiTree ID.
That could be accompanied by a manually edited version of that Text File in WikiTree Markup format.
Then we would have a clearer idea of what automatic conversions are required.
