Sample project using new features

Post by garethhowell » 25 Feb 2022 17:35

I've been re-watching the "What's new in V7" video and I see some examples of the new features in the sample project.

This isn't the sample project that's shipped with V7 as far as I can see. Can we get hold of it?

Gareth, I suggest you ask CP via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php.

I asked, but received the response that whilst it would be a good idea to incorporate the new features in the sample project, there are no plans to do so.

I did once spend a short time trying to "convert" the generic source-records in a copy of the Sample project into templated source records.

It was, err, an interesting exercise that I never completed, and showed that the rigour of the (generic) source records in the Sample was somewhat variable. IIRC I found, e.g., some CWGC entries that were fully documented in their source record and at least one other where the source record contained little more than a title, with the detail in the notes for the burial event.

As it became apparent that converting to templated source records would / should / could cover more than just conversion of generic records to templated (which was what I was interested in investigating), I put the exercise to one side. CP may have come to a similar conclusion about the workload (and I was just investigating one aspect).

Nevertheless, CP must have performed some 'conversions' to the FH Sample Project in order to create the tutorial video that includes word processing features, research notes, source templates, transcription tools, data entry assistants, historical maps, and more. See https://www.family-historian.co.uk/supp ... new-in-fh7. It is not just templated sources.

So why not simply make that converted Project available as a download?

Now there is a challenge for anyone ~ to create a Project that mimics the tutorial video.

I believe that CP have committed to updating the FH book for V7. It seems untenable to describe new features in the book without the samples being available for download, so I suspect that position might “evolve” with time...

Maybe they converted some bits for the tutorial and left lots of other bits untouched - which might lead to questions about why one bit was converted and others not? So discretion became the better part of valour?

Just talking about source records - one wonders whether any revised Sample should have all templated sources, all generic sources or a mix? The first two aren't really acceptable for "the other lot". The third is an odd position. Maybe two Sample projects - one for generics, one for templated? Yuk. Not a simple decision.
